Rio de Janeiro is the most popular city for visitors in South America. It is particularly well known for its carnival and its beaches as well as its Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado Hill, where you can get an excellent view of the city and its surroundings. Many historic buildings can be seen in the city center including the former royal residence called the Paco Imperial and the 18th century Old Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro. Galeao-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport is located about 12 miles from the city center. There are four different airport express buses that run to various locations in Rio de Janeiro as well as two BRT lines, bus rapid transit, that travel quickly because they have their own lanes. The BRT also goes to Vicente de Carvalho metro station.
