About
Instantly recognisable by people the world over, Venice is generally considered to be one of the most unique and romantic cities in the world. Unlike any other city on earth, Venice is built on water and comprises over 100 islands, with a handful forming the core of the city.“La Serenissima”, as it is sometimes referred to, is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and indeed the world, it is also takes its place as one of the most import and powerful city states in the Medieval and Renaissance period; Venice dominated the Adriatic sea both militarily and commercially and its influence stretched across the Mediterranean sea, as one of the undisputed “Super powers” of the day. The city was one of the famous naval powers at the time, which sought to limit the expansion of the Ottoman empire, seeking for example to protect Constantinople from the Ottoman occupation in the 15th century.
It was considered by many to be one of the leading international trade centres of Europe; having extensive contact with the Far East and trading widely there. The birthplace of Vivaldi and of Marco Polo, the city’s fame eclipses its diminutive size.
The great wealth this powerful city-state acquired over the ages is plain to see; the city’s waterways are lined with stunning palaces, countless churches and architectural gems.
Venice is also famous for its masked Carnival in February; where crowds of people wearing elaborate costumes and the distinctive Venetian masks throng the city.
