The largest city and capital of Austria, Vienna has played a major role throughout history. Straddling the Danube River, it is the commercial and cultural hub of the country. Vienna is home to many national and international organizations. While the Inner City traces its roots to Roman times, Baroque and Romanesque palaces reflect the city’s role as the seat of the Hapsburg Dynasty. Along with the Mozarthaus, points of interest include the Hofburg, the Museum of Fine Arts and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Vienna’s Central European location produces four distinct seasons with summer highs in the 90s and winter lows near freezing.

Getting to and from

The main aviation gateway into the country, Vienna International Airport is located approximately 20 kilometers southeast of the city. The S-Bahn commuter rail system connects the airport to the city. The train platform is underneath the terminal. This is the most convenient and least expensive way to reach the city. You can also use IC/Railjet trains. Both trains connect to Vienna’s U-Bahn underground transit system. Purchase tickets from the automated machines on the platform before boarding the trains.
