One of Brazil's largest cities, Fortaleza is found on the coast of northeast Brazil. It is particularly popular for its 25 km of beaches. This is where tourists spend most of their time, but Fortaleza does have a number of other attractions. There is some beautiful architecture in the city, such as the Jose de Alencar Theater, built in 1912 and named for a famous local writer, that you can tour. There are also several unique city tours, such as a boat ride in the ocean, and a few museums, including the Museu de Arte e Cultura Popular, which includes folk art and other cultural artifacts. The Mercado dos Pinhoes is a handicrafts market. You can get freshly-caught seafood at an old fish market in the city. There is also a lively nightlife scene, particularly in the Dragao do Mar area.

Getting to and from

Pinto Martins–Fortaleza International Airport is located around 11 km south of the downtown area. Bus 404 travels between the airport and the city center between 5:10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Coopertaxi is the official airport taxi, and taxis can be found outside the passenger terminal on the ground floor.
