About

Located on Brazil's central coast, Salvador is the capital of the state of Bahia. It has one of the longest coastlines of any Brazilian city, with 50 miles of beaches that vary from those that are calm and suitable for children to those with rougher water for surfers. The city itself was founded in the 16th century and has an old town that is a World Heritage Site. There are many murals throughout the city painted by local artist Bel Borba. You can visit art museums in Salvador as well, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Museu de Arte da Bahia, which focuses on local artists. Seafood is popular locally, and Salvador is known for its spicy, African-influenced cuisine. Salvador also has a week-long annual carnival that attracts both locals and tourists. You can also take a number of interesting day trips from Salvador, including a visit by ferry to Itaparica Island or several other nearby islands.
