Situated on the Caspian Sea, Baku is the capital and leading commercial center of Azerbaijan. Along with governmental agencies, it is home to major corporations and international organizations. The UNESCO-listed, walled Old City with its ancient fortifications stands in contrast with modern, tree-lined pedestrian boulevards filled with exclusive boutiques and trendy eateries. The cityscape of stone mansions and glass office towers reflects off the green and opal blue water. Couples enjoy strolling hand-in-hand along the waterfront promenade or through the city’s wooded parkland. Baku’s temperate, semi-arid climate produces summer highs in the 80s and winter lows near freezing.

Getting to and from Baku

Situated 20 kilometers northeast of Baku, Heydar Aliyev International Airport is the main aviation gateway into the country. The hub for flag carrier Azerbaijan Airlines, it is connected to Baku by a modern, multilane highway. While Terminal 1 handles international passengers, Terminal 2 is used for domestic operations. An express bus connects the airport, the city center and the main railway station, which provides access to regional train service. Departing every 30 minutes, the bus runs from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. Buses run every hour during the night. Purchase tickets from automatic machines just outside the terminal doors.
