When we originally booked, the owner let us know that we should allow ~3 hours for the transit / transport time from the airport (Narita) to the accommodation, which was really helpful for us to be aware of in advance - this also meant we were able to check in several hours early, as the owner knew our expected arrival time. We were immediately shown our room and amenities before being generously gifted snacks (the chocolate-filled koalas quickly became a favourite!) - we felt very much 'at home' from the get-go. We had JR passes, so the nearby JR Takadanobaba station (approx. 5-10 minute walk from Tama Ryokan) was very helpful for accessing many popular places on the Yamanote line (incl. Shibuya, Tokyo, Akihabara). We would absolutely stay again :)
This property may not be suitable for those that have difficulty navigating steep stairs, as there was one set up to our room and another to get down to the shower.

It was cosy and very welcoming. We had the coldest nights of our trip here but still stayed very warm. Great location with the train station and many restaurants and izakaya nearby.

I stayed here with my 2 boys age 4 and 15. My teenage son wanted to experience a traditional Japanese living. That was the reason we chose this Old Japanese Inn. We stayed in a Ryokan style room sleeping on futons on tatami mats. Room has paper sliding doors and walls but was quite warm and comfortable. We felt safe and no issue with noise. The bedding provided kept us warm and cozy during Winter nights. The lady came in to tidy up the room for us everyday. The home is old but very clean. I have dust allergy and very sensitive to dust but I did just fine here. It felt a bit stuffy at first but I did not have any allergic reaction during my stay. The lady is very kind. She brought my 4 year old son some stuffed animals to play and sleep with. That made him very happy. The hallways are narrow and stairs are steep but manageable. My 15 year old and I carried our bags up and down with extra cautions. My 4 year old didn’t have trouble going up and down to shower everyday as long as I was with him. We had no issue with sharing bathroom. There are house rules but being Asian and raised in strict household rules myself I find them to be reasonable and simple to follow even for my kids. We were allowed to leave our luggage there after check out to explore the city some more before our flight out of Tokyo at midnight. That was very helpful. Location is excellent. Overall it was a pleasant stay and great experience for my kids.

The host was kind, welcoming, generous and absolutely fantastic. The fact that the host has lived at that house for around 70 years add so much value and comfort to our experience. A lot of hidden gems found as we get to know the neighbourhood better. And the access to subway was literally 10m from the door. Although, we only found out on our third day there lol

Nice staff, clean and good location.
Through the day in silence, I heard many tiny steps that at first I thought it was a dog but after some time I started to think that they were rodents. I own a dog and they didn’t sound like a dog.. sometimes I would hear it 3 times at once. Didn’t see one through my stay though!

It’s a tatami room and the hotel is more than 70 years of history, basically more than 2 generation been stayed in there. It’s a traditional Japanese style building. Even it’s old but maintain properly. The decoration in the room really add marks and so comfortable and silent. 2 Days I stayed with raining all day and cold. But the room is so warm and I can open the window and listen the sounds of rain. But the location is 30s walk from subway exit 7 and very close to Main Street. The area is residential area but with everything and less crowd compared to many other areas in Tokyo, drug store, shopping, restaurants, supermarket are everywhere there. The host is two Japanese seniors but speak very good English. Foreigners no need to worry cannot communicate. For every vistor, pls treasure the hotel and it’s a must try for different style of hotel you used to go.
Nothing !
