Wonderful
- The staff were warm, friendly and helpful - they provided me with glue for my sunglasses when they broke and an iron and ironing board, and chatted to me a lot
- Right next to the station so that I could get everywhere quickly, and didn't have to look around for the place at all
- They kept hold of my luggage from 1pm on the day of check-in and until 7:30pm on the day of check-out!
- Free full tea-set including loose-leaf tea and snacks resembling roof tiles in the privacy of my tatami room
- Futon took some getting used to on the first night but was very comfortable and cozy by the second
- Bath was the perfect temperature
- They offer a choice of squat or sitting toilet which is something I never thought I would appreciate but did
- Super authentic and cozy Japanese-feeling decor - it seems like every little corner was taken into account
- Absolutely spotless, no dust or dirt at all in my room or anywhere I could see (and I'm very picky about that)
If I have to nitpick, I'd say the 11pm lock-in and closing of the baths is inconvenient (I'd like the baths to close at 1am at least), but honestly my stay was wonderful and I don't have any real complaints

Very comfortable
Strict curfew guests are expected to be inside from 23:30-6:30. If that works for you the property is great

The room is extremely clean, neat, well-organized, and very cozy. It’s much more spacious than i expected and even more beautiful than in the photos.
The host, Ms. Kota, is incredibly kind, and the service is excellent, i have never met a Japanese person as lovely as her.
The shared bathroom and toilet are perfectly clean.
The location is super convenient for getting everywhere, very close to Kyoto Station, with everything you need nearby.
This is my best place to stay during the entire trip. Highly recommend!!!

Perhaps the sweetest mother and daughter team I have ever met. The way they host you made me feel like I was adopted into a Japanese family. Warmly greeted every time I come in the door, shoes or slippers ready. I felt them really serving from the heart, very thoughtful, and that just made my whole time in Kyoto relaxing; even after a long day out. I felt emotional to leave them even, as if I was leaving some family behind.
The room was beautiful with traditional tatami and shoji, even a little tea set in the room to make your own. everything spotless including the shared bath. Has everything you need.
Only thing I would change is the color of the lighting to something warmer!

I really enjoyed the Japanese style room and the staff was friendly. The room was very clean and the price was great compared to anything else in Japan. The only thing is that they lock the doors at 11 pm and you only find out after booking
The place locks at 11 and you only find out after booking

Wonderful
A nice little old fashioned ryokan, near the Kyoto train station. Quiet and neat. And the staff was excellent. When I arrived, there was even a carafe of hot water for tea, and a packet of cinnamon cookies waiting.

Fantastic location! The kindest staff!! Very beautiful rooms and facilities.
The only real downside is the 11pm curfew. Didn’t pose a real problem for me because everything in Kyoto closes early anyway. But if you planned something later it might be a problem

Very Good
Great location, friendly, attentive staff.
I like the vintage esthetic and the way they built things 50+ years ago.
Little things like, shouldn't there be pegs to hang the robes inside the door? Or for towels?
Shouldn't there be a rack or basket for used towels in the Onsen? There's really no good place for used towels in the room itself!
Dryers in the laundry itself are highly inefficient and could stand to be vented outside somehow.

We liked everything about Nihonkan, the owners were very kind accommodating, the location was perfect for us, 5 minutes from the train station and an easy stroll to all the areas you come to Kyoto for. Staying in a traditional Japanese style room was a great experience and as others have mentioned the beds on the floor were comfortable, we had a room with a private bathroom, both the room and the bath/shower were very spacious, we loved our stay!
Nothing.

Wonderful
I loved that in the middle of a contemporary urban sprawl, there was a small traditional Japanese hotel that has been in the family for 120 years, and still five minutes from Kyoto Station.
I love that you feel the love and pride of the mother and daughter as they greet their guests.
I do love a traditional room with tatami mats and futons, a little table with tea service.
It even has an onsen.
It was simple, clean, friendly, and just enough to feel at home, whether staying for a night or weeks.
Hmmm.. all was lovely.
