As well as being the capital of the United Kingdom and England, London is one of the world's leading cities for commerce, culture and more. It was founded nearly 2,000 years ago as part of the Roman Empire. Some of its most popular sights are Buckingham Palace, home of the royal family; the Tower of London; and St. Paul's Cathedral. Many of its world-class museums, including the British Museum and the National Gallery, are free to visitors. London is also famous for shopping, including Harrod's Department Store and Oxford Street, and its theater, which is concentrated in the West End.

Getting to and from London

London is served by four main international airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton.

• Express trains run from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted to major train stations in central London, and these are the fastest routes. There are also local trains from Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton.

• Various bus lines including National Express buses serve all four airports.

• Heathrow is served by the metro: the Piccadilly Line. It is the cheapest way into the city from Heathrow.
