The oldest city in Western Europe and one of the oldest in the world, Lisbon is the capital city of Portugal and faces the Atlantic Ocean. It is a stunning city of white buildings with a Mediterranean climate that results in warm winters and summers. Alfama is an old part of the city that is a winding maze of narrow streets with many restaurants and Fado bars. Fado is traditional, sad Portuguese music that is often heard in restaurants as well.

Getting to and from Lisbon

From Lisbon International Airport, there are a number of options to get into the city. The cheapest and fastest way is by metro. It is about 25 minutes into the city center with one change. However, there can be long lines for the metro tickets at the airport. Aerobuses 1, to the city center, and 2, to the main bus station, have room for luggage, limited stops and destination signs in English. There are also several different city buses, a night bus and taxis available.
