About

Kyoto provides a glimpse into Japan’s mysterious past. The nation’s capital for more than 1,000 years, it was the center of politics, religion, culture and cuisine. The city is the birthplace of Zen Buddhism, Kabuki theater and the traditional tea ceremony. An astonishing number of palaces, shrines and temples adorn the world-famous architectural landscape. Modern life and centuries-old traditions meld seamlessly as trendy shopping plazas and glamorous nightlife venues coexist with ancient specialty shops and tranquil teahouses. The inland location of the city in Western Honshu generates hot summers and cold winters. While summer highs can touch 100 degrees, winter lows average near freezing.

Getting to and from Kyoto

Kyoto does not have its own airport. It is accessible through Kansai International Airport in Osaka. The third busiest in Japan, the airport is located 100 kilometers southwest of the city. Operated by JR-West, The Haruka Express train transports passengers from the airport to Kyoto Station in just over an hour. Travel requires both standard fare and limited express tickets, which can be purchased from the conductor. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available on the train.
