Albania's largest seaport and the second most populated city in the country, Durrës is located on the Adriatic Sea just about 19 miles west of the capital, Tirana. Ancient Greek colonists founded Durrës over 2,000 years ago, and as a result, its attractions include the Archeological Museum, with artifacts from Greek and Hellenistic times, a Roman amphitheater and a Byzantine forum. Durrës Castle and the city walls date back to the 5th century. After diving into the history of the area, you can walk along the seafront promenade and climb Villa Hill to get a panoramic view of the area, or simply sit and people watch on the Seaside Large Steps that lead down into the water. Durrës enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and dry, hot summers.

Getting to and from:

Tirana International Airport is located about 35 km from Durrës. There is a shuttle service available five times per day from the airport to Durrës and six times per day in the opposite direction. You can also reserve a taxi in advance or rent a car.
