About

The capital of Rwanda, Kigali is located near the center of the country. It is bordered on the west and south by the Nyabarongo River, which is part of the headwaters of the Nile, and the Nyabugogo River runs through the city. Kigali was founded in 1907, and it is a modern, vibrant city with many restaurants, bars and cafes that visitors will enjoy. There are also a number of markets throughout the city where Rwandan handicrafts can be purchased. You can take several interesting daytrips from Kigali, including to Volcanoes National Park, where mountain gorillas live. This was where Dian Fossey, subject of the film "Gorillas in the Mist," did her research. Akagera National Park is about 2 1/2 hours from Kigali and is a nature reserve where you can see many different animals, including giraffes, baboons and elephants.
