Once a sleepy fishing village, Playa del Carmen has grown into a popular tourist destination. The city’s exotic scenery is the backdrop for several television programs, including “The Amazing Race” and the telenovela “Peregrina.” Fifth Avenue, a waterfront promenade, is lined with hundreds of shops, restaurants and nightlife venues. Along with its pristine beaches, Playa del Carmen acts as a focal point for adventure and eco tours to nearby Mayan ruins and nature preserves. Water sports include snorkeling, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. Located on the Riviera Maya, the city has relatively stable weather year-round with daily highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s.

Getting to and from Playa del Carmen

The nearest airport is Cancun International Airport. The second-busiest airport in Mexico, it is located approximately 55 kilometers to the north of Playa del Carmen. The airport is connected to the resort by regularly scheduled bus service and hotel transfers. Buses from Cancun arrive at the Riviera bus depot at the intersection of Juarez and Quinta avenues. You can also fly into Cozumel International Airport and take the ferry across the bay.
