About

The new capital of Kazakhstan, Astana is a 21st-century showpiece. It features wide boulevards flanked by landmark buildings designed by world-renowned architects. These futuristic structures contrast with vestiges of old Soviet-style architecture. Situated on the banks of the Ishim River, it is home to government agencies, including the parliament, Supreme Court and presidential palace. Points of interest include the Palace of Independence, the Kazakh Eli Monument and the Bayterek Tower. The warm summers and cold winters are caused by the city’s position on the flat, semi-arid steppe of Central Asia. While summer highs can top 80 degrees, winter lows plummet below freezing.

Getting to and from Astana

Located approximately 17 kilometers southeast of the city, Astana International Airport is the main aviation gateway into Kazakhstan. It is the home base for flag carrier Air Astana. There are separate domestic and international terminals. Along with private taxis, a public bus route connects the airport and city center. Running from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m., the bus departs every 10 to 15 minutes. Centrally located within the country, Astana is a well-positioned auto and rail transport hub. The main railway station provides access to train services for those exploring other parts of Kazakhstan.
