About
The capital of Armenia, Yerevan was founded in the 7th century B.C. You can visit the excavation of the Erebeni Fortress from this era as well as the museum. Little remains architecturally of the city's long rich history, and most of the city center architecture is from the 20th century. However, the Holy Mother of God Katoghike Church of Avan dates from the late 6th century. Other sights of interest to tourists include Republic Square, Victory Park and the Armenian Genocide memorial complex. Yerevan is also an excellent base for day trips to a number of area UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the 4th century Etchmiadzin Cathedral, the 7th-century Zvartnots Cathedral, and the village of Garni, where you can visit a 1st century fortress and other ancient ruins.Getting to and from Yerevan
Zvartnots International Airport is located about 7 miles west of Yerevan. A bus runs between the airport and the city center every 30 minutes between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. and every hour from 10:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. You can also take one of the official airport taxis, AeroTaxi.
