The rooms are always comfortable, we have been staying here for years and it is always a comfortable and homely stay. We usually book the penthouse and it never disappoints. The staff are wonderful and always go out of their way to accomodate us. I appreciated that there was full set of cutlery and crockery available in the room, as well as an ironing board and iron (something we usually request from housekeeping). I also appreciate that housekeeping are meticulous about ensuring that they maintain the rooms to great standards. Linen is always fresh and the rooms are clean and feel like home. The kitchen staff are really amazing, even accomodating my request for milk at 11pm! It sounds like a small thing, but at that time of the evening, when you just want a cup of tea to wind down, their willingness to help was just such a nice touch. Really really love the staff and how warm and helpful they are. This makes all the difference in choosing a place to stay, and its one of the main reasons why we always return. They are really great and always ready assist, regardless of the time.
On the one night, there was a car that was parked on the boulevard (directly across from the hotel) whose alarm was going off for 8 hours straight. Whilst this is no fault of the hotel, security in the area could do nothing to resolve the issue. This was directly outside our balcony, so as you can imagine, no one slept that night. All in all, its a lovely stay. Cant complain about much.

I booked accommodation at the Royal Palm Hotel in Umhlanga via Booking.com, but mistakenly selected 21 April instead of 22 April. Upon arrival, I immediately acknowledged the error and explained that the booking had already been fully paid for. Despite rooms being available, I was told I would need to pay the full amount again to stay. I escalated the matter from reception to the supervisor, then manager, and ultimately the General Manager. At every level, there was no willingness to assist, no practical discretion, and no attempt to find a reasonable solution. While I understand the technical basis of a “no-show” policy, this could have been handled far more reasonably. The hotel had already received full payment upfront, and at worst I would have expected perhaps a reasonable administrative fee for the date error. Instead, the approach was rigid, transactional, and completely lacking in customer-focused thinking. As a matter of principle, I was not prepared to pay twice for the same stay. I therefore left without checking in and chose to support another 4-star hotel in Umhlanga, which was far more accommodating and service-oriented. What makes this especially short-sighted is the business opportunity they lost. Our company has executives travelling to KwaZulu-Natal monthly, and this stay was intended as a trial for future accommodation. Based on typical travel patterns, this would have represented at least approximately R4,000 per two-day trip, or around R12,000 per month across our executive travel, equating to a minimum of approximately R144,000 per annum in accommodation alone — excluding food and beverage spend. Over 30 years of international travel, I have rarely experienced such poor customer service alignment and lack of practical business sense. There are many other accommodation options in Umhlanga that understand the value of long-term client relationships. I would strongly recommend future travellers consider those instead.

LOCATION IS EXCELLENT FOR SHOPPING, RESTAURANTS, BEACH CLOSE BY. I WAS VISITING GATEWAY HOSPITAL VERY CONVENIENT, AND EASY SAFE WALKING DISTANCE FROM ROYAL PALM HOTEL DURING THE DAY. HOTEL ROOM WAS SPACIOUS, WITH A BALCONY.VERY CLEAN, WITH A COFFEE STATION. BED WAS SUPER COMFORTABLE. STAFF WERE EXCELLENT IN EVERY RESPECT, KIND AND COURTEOUS, ALWAYS THERE TO HELP. MY STAY WAS EXCEPTIONAL
