Rooftop bar offered great views of the surrounding area. The convenience of the on-site restaurants made dining options easy. Front desk staff promised to deliver on multiple things (champagne to be delivered to our room & to assist with getting our room partially refunded)- they use didn’t deliver.
The A/C in our room didn’t work. We were promised a 50% refund on the cost of our room. After spending 2-3 hours on the phone with booking.com and the front desk, we were promised everything to be processed- it never was and now I can’t get in touch with anyone from the hotel or booking.com to settle

Great value for the location! Right next to central park and the lincoln center. Other tourist stops are a short subway ride away. Good restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. A/C worked. The lobby and bellhop services were nice and well done. Staff was friendly and check-in was smooth and easy. Hotel room itself was average.
View from my room was of a building and the window shade wouldn't move, but that wasn't a big deal to me. Bathroom was small (bathroom would not be suitable for plus-sized people) and the room felt run down, but seemed average for similar hotels in the area.

Good size hotel room, 2 double beds. Nice bar and and restaurant attached to hotel. Roof terrace was at top of hotel but wasn't actually part of the hotel but was still nice. Very friendly, helpful staff. Free water bottles from reception.
Wouldn't say this is a didn't like but the bathroom was a little dated compared to the bedroom.
Also we were travelling with 4 children and there wasn't really much communal space where we could sit with them and have a drink, play cards etc. But these are minor points and didn't detract from our enjoyment.

Good
Great location just across from
Lincoln Center.
It’s looking a little tired. There was a problem with the key system when I arrived which meant long waits for security to let you into your room. I didn’t like the first room I was allocated, but was happy with the alternative offered.

Good
The hotel reception, restaurant pool etc.
Rooms and bathrooms need work done snd refurbishment. Our room had nails sticking out, plaster and wooden strips peeling off.
Bathroom was too small. Definitely can't accommodate two people and even as a single person to enter and come out was difficult. Sink was too small as well.

Nothing.
I disliked everything. Especially the fact that they were EXTREMELY dishonest with me. I checked in July 4th. It was chaotic (I have some tolerance to that; it was July 4th). I had three rooms and I was with minors. It was 100 degrees and the AC on one of the rooms was not working. After 2 hours they hadn’t fixed the problem and they had no additional room to accomodate us. We negotiated that they would reimburse us. I do not remember the name of the attendant but I can describe her: 30-something, African America with a long hair (see below). I moved and paid another hotel. We did the process through Bookings’ customer service. The person at the front desk CONFIRMED that they received the email from booking and that would suffice. To my surprise, the next day I received an email from Booking saying they could not reach an accomodation with the property. I went back the Empire Hotel and I spoke with the manager (Mrs Maggie who after I described the attendant recognized who she was). She said the problem was that the system showed that the rooms were still occupied (of course we checked out the moment we agreed that they would reimburse us; it was complete chaos at the front desk and I am not surprised that the attendant did not checked us out). We clarified that and she guaranteed me that since this misunderstading was solved, they would clear the reimbursement. Now I just discovered that they still did not agree to reimburse me. Booking offered 1/3 of what I spent in hotel credits. From the part of the hotel this is straight out dishonesty. As far as Booking is concerned it is totally unsatisfactory. I always used booking precisely because of the expectation of a smooth experience if something goes bad. The experience was terrible and I do not want credits because if do not get reimbersed I will no longer use Booking.com.

Location. Great staff. Excellent housekeeping.
The bathroom in room 530 has a lunatic shower. Cold or boiling and the handheld shower spins out of control. Useable with practice. Needs attention.

Disappointing
The lobby, the vibe, the decor and the staff were great.
The hotel is dated and the rooms are very small. I didn’t read the small print - a “queen” room contains 2 double beds which meant an uncomfortable night with 4 people sharing a room. The bathroom is TINY and the hot water ran out - only lukewarm. The reason we booked this hotel was the pool - we knew it was going to be hot and the kids tired from sightseeing. The pool is on the roof and there is a lovely area to sit with great views. The pool is also TEENY TINY and the water was really disgusting. We couldn’t see our feet or our kids swimming under the water it waa so dirty. They threw a sinky in and it took 15 minutes to find it in a grid search with our feet (along with some other nasty stuff). The kids aren’t allowed on the rooftop after 7pm, although they had locked the doors before 6:30 when we tried to go up. No restaurant or breakfast available. Close to the subway. Also if you’re foreign - there are no phones in the rooms and no way of contacting the front desk - they send you a number you can call or text but this was impossible on our Australian phones, even with a US eSIM, so had to physically go to the desk if we need anything.
