Very Good
The atmosphere at the hostel is very relaxed and the rooms are cozily furnished.
The breakfast selection could be a bit more varied.
The bathrooms were clean on the first night, but not so much after that.

Very Good
Very central location, Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf in Walking distance. Helpful staff, big public area, well equipped kitchen, a lot of activities offered
Not so cheap and area around the hostel somehow dodgy after dark (but that is downtown San Francisco)

Exceptional
Friendly staff, lots of extra events at the hostel and info on things to do in San Francisco.
No elevators but staff are willing to help with getting bags up the stairs.

Very Poor
Location is okay
I booked a private room, but the overall experience was very disappointing. The room and shared bathroom were extremely dirty; the bathroom seemed to be used long-term by someone, as it was always full of personal belongings.
The property is poorly maintained, with very old carpet (including holes), damage to the walls, and even ants in the bathroom. There was also no sink in the room, which was inconvenient.
The private rooms are located in a separate building two blocks away, which is difficult with luggage, especially since there are stairs and no ground-floor access (+ no elevator). The code-entry door was also quite inconvenient.
I reported the issues, but nothing was really resolved. The internet connection was unreliable as well.

Green Tortoise was everything I wanted in a hostel and more. It has ample kitchen facilities, kind staff willing to help you store your bags. It has individual bathroom stalls that let you take care of all your needs. It even has a dry sauna you can reserve which is something I did not expect. I loved the bottom bunks which had all around privacy curtains making sleeping in a 4 person dorm not be an issue at all. Every night there are social activities that bring hostel guests together and I participated every night. I made a lot of connections and the social activity helped me be more content with exploring town alone without worrying about being alone. Would 100% recommend to anyone who is looking to travel alone for the first time a great city with lots to do.
AC and internet could be better. Honestly, still great given the price. It was 80s when I visited in March. Summer might be difficult if you have difficulty sleeping when its hot. Also for the group events at night, generally skip the food and order directly with the exception of Mondays when they generously provide dinner for free to all the hostel guests.

The staff was super friendly and helpful i felt safe and the people staying at the hostel were also friendly, I ended up going on an epic road trip with a bunch of them to las Vegas so really no complaints. I would recommend to anyone to stay here San Francisco is a wonderful city with unique quirks

The staff and other guests where really friendly. The breakfast is simple but good enough. The room had a great view!
To be honest, everything was fine. It was far from my convention but that's not their problem. I just wish it was closer hehe

Wonderful
My room and the hostel main lobby room were very nice and clean.
The hostel provided many different events and nice things to see around San Francisco.
The breakfast was a little bare, with just bagels.

Standard Room with Shared Bathroom
This private, bright colored room provides free wifi, reading lights and free film rentals. shared bathrooms are available in the hallway.
please note: some of our queen private rooms are located in our annex building on bartol street, just 1.5 blocks from the main green tortoise hostel. while it's a short walk, the annex offers a quieter, more laid-back experience—perfect if you're looking to escape the late-night noise from the nightclub near our main building. the annex has its own kitchen, cheaper laundry facilities, and a more private, airbnb-style feel. you'll still have 24/7 access to everything at the main building, including our front desk, lounge, and communal events. plus, on the third floor of the annex building, there is a patio that has an incredible view of the bay and the bay bridge!
