Good
Great neighborhood. Plenty of good eats from China town to North Beach.
First, I have met some really cool people. GT is great for socializing and winner for it’s awesome location and everyday free breakfast. Bonus, occasional free delicious meals. The dining-room is like stepping into the great splendor of San Francisco’s past. Additionally, I really appreciate the continuous historical footage of SF projected on the walls.
However, I have two gripes: First one, is not at all the staff’s fault, it’s about the guest. I have found repulsive behavior of the guest. First, every time I go to the loo, people not flushing, mostly, their feces after using the toilet, disgusting. Additionally, the lack of care by guest of not putting their used toilet paper and what nots in the trash bin. I don’t know if it’s because 95% are young and possibly privileged, used to other people picking up after them, don’t get the concept of communal space, but it’s gross. The cleaning crew do a fabulous job, they really work their ass off. I think to handle this issue is to have more staff that are focused on just attending the bathrooms. I understand the financial effects, maybe charge a little more to cover the labor; I don’t think putting up signs of instructing people to flush will help. Second issue is the bunk bed mattress. They are very thin and hard. I have visited a few other hostels since I have arrived to SF, and all have decent mattress except for the Green Tortoise, which is a shame. I have had painful nights sleeping on them. However, the bunk construction is solidly build. When people climb to the upper bed over me, I am not disturbed by shaking, or noise from the frame creaking, shifting etc. Wood frames rule over, thin Ikea like metal bunk beds. Question, would I come back? The thin matrices, I can only imagine would be comparable to a prison bed. It’s rough, even for one who is in good shape like myself. Due to that, and guest gross bathroom behavior, I’d probably skip.
