Pleasant
Great location - close to the city center, Exchange square (if you need the tram), Victoria station, and Salford railway station, if you want to travel somewhere around Greater Manchester. Friendly staff and nice breakfast.
We have always enjoyed staying at The Black Lion. Therefore, we came back for the third time, and we made our reservation as soon as we started planning our trip to Manchester, 6 months in advance.
This is why we were a bit surprised and disappointed when we were given perhaps the smallest room in the hotel, The Rathbones. Compared to the Sankey Soap and the Salford Suite, the rooms given to us the previous times, in this one, we found it hard to find a place for our 2 cabin-size suitcases and it was quite a challenge to get to the other side of the bed without hitting yourself in the TV placed on the wall. The hotel was fully booked, so there was no option for a change. I could have expected this room if this was a last-minute reservation, but not when I had booked it half a year in advance, mentioning that we were coming back for the 3rd time. If I was running a hotel, I wouldn't give my smallest room to regular clients, coming back every year, especially when the booking is made that early.

Good
Staff were nice, cocktails were amazing, room decor was nice
We were in the Sheridan room which looks on to a very very busy road so trying to sleep was terrible. The wait for breakfast on the first morning was 25 minutes, poached eggs very overcooked & toast only ever toasted on one side of the bread.

No lift - I should have checked. Bit noisy, on a busy road.

Service at breakfast on the first day was terrible however the next day wasn’t as bad so I assume it was down to being open till 5am for the football.

Poor
Small but very clean room. Lively pub atmosphere.
We paid for breakfast, but when we went for it, it had been cancelled, due to the chef phoning in sick. We were sent to the Mitre, which is a sister hotel and a 10 minute walk away, so we got our bags and checked out. When we arrived at the Mitre, they were overwhelmed with people from the Black Lion and also walk in customers. Everybody was complaining about the wait for food, most people were waiting over an hour and people were getting irate,, we had to wait 50 mins and it neatly caused us to miss our train. This really spoilt the experience and it would have been a good score otherwise.

Wonderful
Staff were amazing especially the lady who wore glasses in the morning/day shift sorry didn't get your name.
Shower was great, very comfortable bed, although it was on a main road it wasn't noisy with the windows closed. But they even supplied ear plugs if needed.
Everything you could need in the room was there a clock, hairdryer, even an iron and ironing board.
There was one chair in the room which was very uncomfortable.
Our TV remote was broken so we couldn't watch the TV. We didn't realise till we had been showered and in bed so couldn't be bothered to go down to the bar to let the staff know. But did report it straight away. There was no bedside lights so we had a big bright room.or two small lights above the bed which was hard to read with as more decrotive.

Location is fantastic, 5 minutes walk to everything. Breakfast was outstanding. Staff fantastic
The base from the music from pub was loud, and below the window was the extractor fans from kitchen (I think), but the fan provided drowned this out. The shower temperature dial was awful, but staff came and helped fix it immediately (it is going to be fixed). Bedding a towels were spotless, smelled good. Floor needed a proper clean, my feet were covered in dust each time I took my footwear off but otherwise OK.

Property was excellent, friendly helpful people
Unfortunately we arrived in the middle of the hottest day of the year, the room wasn’t a quipped with air conditioning, although it had a fan in the room it just pushed the warm air around .
This made the night very uncomfortable….but can’t blame the staff or hotel for that in all fairness

The hotel location was great in relation to the city centre.
The down side was it being on top of a pub...which i knew when I booked it..but didn't realise the world cup was on and England was playing...the noise outside the hotel was horrendous as we had to sleep with the windows open due to the very hot spell of weather.
The breakfast at the hotel was decent and the staff were very accommodating.
No air con and being on the 2nd floor was a killer.
Noise outside, no air con so had to sleep with windows open...under normal weather conditions and windows closed then it could have been fine.
