Very Good
The hotel is stunning, in particular the communal areas. The bedrooms are reasonable with bathrooms that are lovely. Staff are friendly and inviting and could not do enough for us (including carrying bags up three flights of stairs on arrival) all staff members greeted guests with a smile and a “good morning/evening” if seeing you.
The age of the building means that there is little the company can do to alter certain aspects so be prepared for some quirks (including stairs to all floors, narrow doorways etc) although having air conditioning in the room was much appreciated. There are many places nearby offering breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner and the hotel is around 5 minutes slow walking from Farringdon station. The amenities in the bathroom were fantastic. The honesty bars are a nice touch, though some greater variety of brands would increase the appeal. The mini-bar in the room looked well stocked though typically pricey for a hotel. With a convenience store less than 2 minutes walk away, there was no need to rely on the mini bar.
Connections via bus, train or tube are all within minutes and the local sights all within easy reach of the hotel.
The hotel is in a busy area with (at the time of writing) lots of construction work going on and a nearby traders market which operates all night. As the glazing is not particularly soundproof the sound of trucks, reversing alarms, heavy loading and unloading of goods can be heard throughout the night and the builders get started just as the market is slowing down, getting a restful night isn’t easy. It’s also possible to hear the other guests having a shower or a noisy visit to the loo in the early hours so if you’re the type to prefer a lie in, I would suggest finding a modernised hotel.
The light from the hallway was so bright it shone underneath the bedroom door all night and the wooden shutters over the windows (while charming) do very little to prevent light screaming in from 5am. If you need a dark room or are a light sleeper, be aware of these things before booking.
We should have better appreciated the proximity of the hotel to the market though there is little the hotel can do about the noise of course - the place has been there since the 17th century! The bed while very comfortable was too small for two of us, the pillows were softer than a cloud so with our personal preference for hard pillows, the noise of the market and builders directly opposite we barely slept on any of the 3 nights we stayed despite being exhausted from sightseeing.
These are not “bad” things, just things to be aware of, this is a business which is providing a 21st century service in a 17th century setting and doing a good job of it. Like everywhere it’s not perfect so don’t expect that and you will not go wrong if you stay here.

Great welcome, staff were attentive, and no request was a problem.
Breakfast in the room was great. The lounges' library and honesty bar were all used.
Location is great for a lost weekend in London.
Slippers please!

Poor
Beautiful old building. Good staff, friendly atmosphere.
Noise from street was very loud until very late. We go up to London a lot on weekends, this was the worst we experienced. I realise that it is outside the control of the hotel but, if you want to sleep, cannot recommend.

Wonderful
Beautiful place right in the city but it was really quiet and relaxed. Staff were very welcoming and friendly and Bagheera the hotel cat added some feline sophistication.
I wish there had been tea- coffee making facilities on site.
