Very Good
Convenient location for me.
Would have liked more info about the restaurant - didn’t realise there was one, heavy reliance on using the tv for hotel info which isn’t my thing.

Wonderful
we had a club room which was very nice, but we did not know about the steep stairs until we checked in. We managed to cope with these for the 3 nights, but would have been good to have been told up front.
The Sauna and Steam room were broken so were unable to be used. Thought the parking charge was a little high.

Pleasant
The hotel has a lot of charm, the building is very nice and historic. The lobby and main staircase are charming.
Breakfast was at best a basic English breakfast, the orange juice was tang - no "four star" hotel serves tang. The restaurant has no bar and as I understand is an indian restaurant which is strange for a hotel in my view. Our room had a very STEEP and SLIPPERY staircase, we are not young and this to us was dangerous. The bed is on the upper level, the bathroom on the lower level. They warn that it can take 15 minutes for hot water to reach the upper floors and the climate system can take 20 minutes to adjust - which is done via the TV...why???

Poor
Location. Ideal for Excel and ABBA areas as a very short walk from Poplar DLR station.
Unfriendly staff. Simply not welcoming. Example - when we arrived and I had to drive off to the car park they refused to commence check in process until I had got back as room was booked in my name, even though I had walked in with my wife and there was no-one else in reception.
Have to mount pavement to unload bags and then park. Car park a 150 yard walk in rain and not properly secure.
No heat (not even towel rail) in bathroom which was like an ice box - no chance of towels drying.
Smell of drains in room at all times.
Breakfast so poor we didn't bother on our second morning even though we had paid for B&B - eg broken hot drinks machine so had to wait for full jug of cold water to boil (we had finished breakfast before it did), bread for toaster was still frozen, cheap undrinkable juices, no marmalade (waitress had never heard of marmalade!) etc etc
Very poor overall.

Fair
Interesting building
Can't open a window, heating controlled by TV, which dominates the room, music via TV but only commercial channels and if you want to fix the heating you lose your radio, technology everywhere, but it's supposed to be a heritage hotel. What's wrong with a switch. No instructions for anything. Takes several minutes to get hot water but how do you know the shower is not set on cold? Just goes on, the misery.

The building is lovely and the rooms well decorated
The sink never had hot water, and the shower was only lukewarm, taking over 20 minutes to heat up. After a late check-in and struggling with the water, we later found a note in the room advising us to run the water for 10 –15 minutes to get hot water. We left the sink running for over 25 minutes with no success. The following morning, we had to wake up earlier to run the shower for more than 15 minutes, which meant we had to choose to miss breakfast at the hotel before work. While I understand the building is listed, this should have been clearly communicated by reception at check-in.

Misleading policies, stressful communication and poor room conditions
I had a very disappointing and stressful experience with this hotel.
When I made the booking, the hotel’s official policy clearly stated a £50 security deposit as a pre-authorisation (hold). However, after booking, I received messages from the property requesting a £100 swipe, not a hold. This is a clear contradiction of their own written policy.
I tried to contact the hotel multiple times to clarify this issue. Despite explaining clearly that I was travelling with a small baby, the communication was unhelpful, rigid, and showed no empathy. Instead of resolving the issue professionally, I was left dealing with unnecessary stress right before arrival.
In the end, they accepted the £50 deposit, but only after excessive discussion and unnecessary stress, which should never happen when the policy is already clearly written.
Unfortunately, the problems did not stop there. The room itself was below acceptable standards:
• Poor or almost non-existent ventilation
• Very weak and unreliable Wi-Fi
• Television with little to no signal
To add to the disappointment, the irony was that during check-out, the reception staff pressured me to leave a positive review on Booking.com, despite being fully aware of the issues and stress I experienced during my stay. I found this extremely unprofessional.
Overall, this property suffers from misleading and inconsistent policies, poor customer service, and low room quality.
Based on my experience, I do not recommend this hotel to anyone, especially families or travellers who expect transparency, basic comfort, and respectful communication.

Very nice and special hotel, I slept well and I talked to some nice people at the reception and breakfast. I personally took the bus to and from and it was great.
