The renovated parts of the hotel were very well done, with a large comfortable room and lovely bathroom facilities. The old, elegant Grand Café was splendid and the food delicious. Bonus was a nice, sharp knife for cutting my perfectly done steak (many restaurants do not bother to upgrade their cutlery). The staff was unfailingly friendly and helpful with everything.
There were only two problems. One was the strong smell of mould outside of my door (room 510) due to leaking pipes nearby (but that - I was told - would be fixed soon. The other problem was the heating in my room which - no matter how high I set it - remained a bit chilly.

Beautiful hotel, right across from the train station. Restaurant was beautiful! Movie theater in the hotel for guests. They were showing the latest Downton Abbey.

The location was central and good.
The front desk staff wasn’t very pleasant, and there seemed to be a lack of willingness to be helpful. Especially one employee (bald with facial hair) was very rude, and he had an attitude and was very rude. He clearly didn’t get his proper hospitality training, or it just went over his head.
The baby’s crib was requested ahead of time and was confirmed by the hotel, but it wasn’t in the room at first. The one they brought had a hole in it. A yellowing mattress with disgusting stains was left exposed after the employee who brought in the crib stripped the sheets off it to put it in the crib.
The room was not very clean with dirty upholstered furniture. Chairs and table heights didn’t match and quite impossible to use the table when sitting in the very low chairs. Stains were all over the furniture. One of the chairs had zero cushion, and I thought I was falling through when I sat on it because it dipped so low. None of the future went together and felt like it was cheap furniture pulled from some secondhand outlet thrown together to fill up the space.
Housekeeping was awful. We came back from a full day out to find the welcome fruits that were partially eaten by our toddler still left on the table, as if anyone would eat the browning fruits. There was hair on the “new” towels they left out. Not sure what the standard of cleanliness is at this place.
Also, there is roadwork and construction going on at the front of the hotel so you have to use a back/side entrance by the garbage dump. It was disgusting and very unpleasant to say the least. Stay anywhere else but here! Definitely overpaid way too much for dirty room with cheap stained furniture with rude staff.

Walking distance to all attractions, very convenient. Hotel staff was accommodating and friendly. Extremely clean. Overall The Scotsman is a fabulous place to stay.
