Very Poor
Disappointing Service at The Balmoral
We recently had the opportunity to stay at The Balmoral, renowned as Edinburgh's most prestigious hotel, and we arrived with high expectations given its esteemed reputation and price point of over €800 per night. Regrettably, our experience fell short, particularly in the realm of service.
Communication Breakdown
From the very beginning, it was clear that there was a significant disconnect between the reservations, reception, and housekeeping teams. Despite clearly outlining our requirements—such as a bath mat, a specific room size, and the absence of a sterilizer and bottle warmer—our room was not adequately prepared. This lack of coordination was disappointing given our late hour of arrival.
Dining Experience
Our dining experience at the hotel was equally underwhelming. We were overlooked when it came to service, even though we were staying at the hotel, celebrating my nephew’s birthday and had children with us. When I sought assistance regarding our needs, I was met with an off-handed remark by the manager suggesting I find a babysitter, which I found to be highly inappropriate and out of place.
Concierge Service
The concierge service also left much to be desired. When I requested a modification to the number of guests for an upcoming reservation, the staff member displayed visible annoyance, making me feel unwelcome at what should have been a warm and accommodating venue.
Attention to Detail
Throughout our stay, numerous oversights indicated a lack of attention to detail. For instance, at breakfast, I was mistakenly served a double espresso instead of a single. I had specifically requested that my daughter’s soup be served before her schnitzel, yet this did not happen. Additionally, despite asking for my nephew’s birthday cake to be brought to the table and then put away for dinner, it was left on the table to melt—ignored by staff despite my clear and repeated requests.

It’s history and location.
I thought it was not worth the money. It’s not unique in its services and amenities. For the price I paid, I expected more. I could’ve stayed down the street for half the price and get similar “luxury”. Wanted to see if it worth it and found it wasn’t.

Excellent location that made it easy to get to tourist destinations. The room was comfortable and large. The bathtub/shower combo was fantastic. The staff at the hotel were extremely helpful, courteous and provided great suggestions of things to do/see in the area. They went above and beyond to make sure that I had an exceptional stay at the hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely use it again.

I love the balmoral. I always feel welcome and the staff are amazing always going the extra mile to make sure everything is perfect.
The room I stayed in 502. I appreciated the team trying to get me room 500 as it is my preference. But room 502 was not my favourite. It wasn’t the teams fault. But in future I would just rather not be put in a room with no bathroom window. It made me feel claustrophobic.

The Balmoral is the perfect location to experience Edinburgh.
It is simply a must.
Situated perfectly, the best staff I encountered on my 6 Days Trip in Scotland.
The restaurant is simply fabulous, you have to eat there.

Stunning old building that is appointed and beautifully decorated. My 5th floor room was lovely. Complimentary still and sparkling mineral water was appreciated. Had drinks and dinner at the hotel's french brasserie. Service excellent and the food was very good.
I do not like the oversized tubs with the glass half door. Anyone over the age of 60, with rare exceptions, will have a hard time getting in and out and would prefer a shower without the oversized tub. That said the bathrooms are well appointed and very clean. Love the Sean Connery 007 photos.
