The location is lovely. I suspect the cost of maintaining a golf course accounts for the price of somewhat overpriced accommodation
A story of 'almost there'.
On arrival. Huge dirty brown mark across the net curtain in the room. I wouldn't consider this as a superior room, which is what I booked. I'd consider this a minimum standard room at a hotel of this supposed rating.
We had a bottle of prosecco which we hadn't finished by day two. It was on the table with the glasses. Arrived back in the evening to find the glasses gone. Nothing to drink the rest with.
Went on the supposed 'looping' nature walk which stopped at unexpectedly at a square breeze block building knee deep in thistles next to a small lake. Asked at the desk wondering if we'd missed a signpost but no. Not a looping walk at all. And VERY poorly signposted too.
Breakfast on day two. Ordered two poached eggs at breakfast. Had to ask twice more before they were delivered. So long, in fact, my wife had already finished her breakfast.
All in all a deeply disappointing experience.
No standard three pin mains plugs anywhere near the bed. I wanted to plug in my laptop and work in bed, but not having a three metre extension lead meant this was impossible. What hotel doesn't provide proper sockets these days?

The property was absolutely beautiful! The bed was very comfortable and the hotel was very well kept. We enjoyed learning about the history of the property. The location was peaceful and a quick walk to the bus stop to take us into Edinburgh. The food was good at The Pentland and the bar.
It was a bit confusing at first to find our way through the hotel since there are half floors, but we got the hang of it fairly quickly.

Beautiful grounds outside the city
Unfortunately I was hospitalised with a serious infection whilst on oncology during my stay. This meant being in hospital and ill for most of the second week of our trip and was advised by medical professionals to extend our stay . Despite this being our second stay and a 9 night booking, the hotel were unwilling to accommodate us for an extra night without a ridiculous rate of nearly £400 for the night. Despite our circumstances and immediate need, they could have given us a similar room for a reasonable price and took a lot of additional stress and need to move hotels out of the situation. They were 99% occupied at the time and the rate should not have been an issue on that basis given our repeated custom. To say this was disappointing when we needed them most is an understatement and an indication of the values of this hotel. We unfortunately had to move which was an unneeded stress on my body and as a result of this action we will not be returning. A call from customer services or email was offered on checkout - I am still waiting. Says it all.
