This is a lovely boutique hotel I booked to stay here after visiting the spa and being very impressed. Sadly knocked 3 points off 10/10 due to how I was treated by 1 staff member at Reception.
Some Delux Rooms have a large balcony but overlook an unpleasant side street and unsightly old office block.
ADVICE - ask for a room that doesn't have a street view and if you need aircon check you get a room with functioning aircon.
Aircon wasn't working and air on arrival was very very stale and stuffy. The room also felt very dark.
When you open a window the aircon switches off.
As air was so stale had to open window to air the room and sat on balcony so did not discover the air con wasn't working at all until sleeping at night.
This was not dealt with well by Reception.
Staff attended room in the night at 5am... I had tried calling Reception earlier 2/3am but no answer. Established whilst aircon control switched on nothing was happening. No flow of air no cooling. It simply wasn't working. Was offerred the option to sit at the pool at 5am. I couldn't stay in room the air quality was too bad to sleep in.
Following day staff member on reception was rude.
1. Cut me off and insisted "my colleague said its working" re aircon
2. I asked to change rooms and he told me were full. I had to advise him booking.com says you have rooms available
3. Then stated that he wasn't sure if my category of room available. I stated booking.com says deluxe rooms available.
I shouldn't have had to insist to get the room changed when alternative rooms were available and the air quality in the room was so bad I couldn't sleep in the room at all.
This staff member repeatedly said "its working"... (well the control unit switched on but nothing happenned no air flow no cooling, and awful stale air in room)
I was offerred another room after I insisted I needed to change rooms, but couldn't move until 3pm. The new room was lovely with properly functioning effective aircon.
This isn't how guests should be treated. If there's a problem it should be acknowledged and put right ASAP.

Everything! Staff were great and location was 30 seconds to the old town with a ton of restaurant options. All the staff from the front desk to Carlos and Jose in the bar were extremely friendly and great at their jobs! Would definitely stay here again.
There really isn't anything negative about this place.

Loved the rooftop pool and hot tub, the sauna and steam rooms on the lower level, the fun furniture and decor throughout the common areas, the kind and helpful staff, the amazing breakfasts, and the location. In fact, we liked it so much that we forfeited a night at another hotel to return to Castanheiro for our final night in Funchal.
Not much...we loved it! My only suggestion is that someone could clean the plexiglass beside the outdoor pool so that swimmers could better enjoy the view.

Breakfast was excellent, pool was small but pretty rooftop setting, staff were super helpful, lots of returning customers, room was quiet, Easter Sunday fine dining meal was super and great value.
Breakfast was missing options that weren't unhealthy fat types or the types of carbs that dont trigger blood sugar, e.g. no fish, no avocado, limited nuts / seeds. Lots of fruit and full English options.

Amazing breakfast - there was nothing missing. Engaging staff, polite and ever so helpful. Hotel location is right in the centre of town. Hotel is clean and well decorated. Pools, sauna are all in really good conditions. Room was amazing with great views, bed was super comfy - could not have asked for me.

This hotel is exceptional in many ways - the location is great, the food is amazing and the staff couldn't be more welcoming and helpful - can't wait to go back! Our room was large with a seating area and a walk in shower. The rooftop area was fantastic with the infinity pool and drinks and snacks service from the bar - great views!
There is nothing not to like about this hotel! From the moment we arrived and were offered a glass of madeira wine, we were hooked!
