We loved the hotel’s rural setting, high above Funchal, its old world luxury, and the quality of service offered by the staff. Best of all was the direct access to the extraordinary adjacent Palheiro garden. A very special hotel.

Location, range of rooms to sit in, friendliness of the staff
Food was expensive and a bit over-complicated, golf was expensive and clubs not very good. Show ran very hot every now and then.

This is a gorgeous, high end property. The staff was absolutely superb and treated us with the utmost respect and friendliness in spite of showing up in our hiking clothes. The history of the place is so interesting. We even saw Christina Blandy and her 2 dogs on the property.
Wish we had stayed at least 2 nights.

Nice freshly renovated room, beautiful lobby and marvellous breakfast seating outside in the morning. Next to the beautiful garden and golf. Small Madeira wine tasting. Guided tour over the property with the owner.
Breakfast is a bit limited, especially at peak times.
Total failure to organise golf experience, likely the hotel staff and the golf club staff do not “speak” the same language.

Friendly personnel,free upgrade of the room, interesting localisation, nice gardens and views.Good hotel restaurant.
The air condition in the room was not efficient ,we could not sleep as the temperature was too high.This was reported to the reception but nothing could be done about it.
The breakfast buffet was very poor.The choice of wines in the hotel restaurant was average.The pool was not heated.
