Noise can travel. It is good that people were quiet and respectful at night though!

Very Good
The location of this hostel is perfect. It's close to "downtown" and the lake. There is a fair amount of free parking across the street. They also have a shared van going to the popular Roy's Peak hike twice a day. I liked having an ensuite shared bathroom. There is a fairly decent sized locker area in the room for each bed that you can lock if you bring your own lock. I liked having curtains on the bed for more privacy.
I was assigned a top bunk and there was a skylight above me. In the summer, the sun doesn't set until late so there wasn't a way to make it dark until the sun set. Also, I had to strip my bed and take the sheets to the main lobby area which was not ideal when you are waking up and checking out early while trying to be quiet to those still sleeping. The main hang out areas were really hot during the day with the sun beaming through all the windows in the front. It was too hot to hang out in the building during the daytime.

Fair
Helpful staff. Clean bathroom.
Its website states “Haka House Wanaka offers spacious private rooms that provide extra comfort, complete amenities and ultimate privacy so you can relax and make yourself at home.” A family member and I stayed one evening at Haka House Wanaka in a twin room with ensuite at the end of November 2025. Staff at check-in were helpful, and the facility is within easy walking distance of the lake, shops and restaurants. The $10 per night charge for on-site parking was a surprise, so we parked across the street.
The “spacious” private twin room was, in fact, very cramped with zero space between the beds, and minimal space between the beds and the walls. The bathroom was small but clean. While the Haka House website states the room has a desk and chair, the desk was tiny with one stool. While there was a hot water jug, there were no coffee, tea or other supplies in the room.
Sleeping was a challenge. A group staying at the hostel talked loudly in front of the facility and close to the private rooms from around midnight until 1:15 a.m., when I asked them to please respect the privacy of other guests. Other loud outside conversations continued until 2:00 a.m. So much for HHW’s “ultimate privacy.” When I checked out, staff apologized and confirmed that, while the hostel has a 10:00 p.m. curfew, it’s not enforced. With no number posted to call staff in a situation like this, how does one request assistance?
In conclusion, for a young person looking for a youth hostel experience, Haka House Wanaka could be a pleasant place to stay. Nevertheless, based on my experience, for adults I recommend other accommodation options in Wanaka.

Wonderful
Haka House is a really nice accommodation for the price you pay! With also a good location located in the centre.
Luckily we got a free room upgrade to a double room with a private bathroom, which makes this review maybe a bit unfair. However the building was clean, kitchen was big enough and parking is possible at Haka House. You can park on the other side of the road for free which is quite easy.
Nothing… :)

Good
Staff was super friendly and very helpful.
I booked quite last minute, it was available. I did not realize it was a hostel so it was pretty tiny for our group. Just ok for 1 night.
Shower was small and water was too hot. It was difficult to find mode where water won’t be too hot.

Great location with large kitchen. And free parking across the street.
Showers were small and wished I had brought my own shampoo/soap as the stuff provided wasn’t great.

Poor
The bed.
Lots of things. The employees have so much laundry to keep them busy so they have no time to tidy up the rest of the hostel. Very tight sleeping arrangements. Dirty kitchen. Have to pay to park your vehicle but can park across the street. T

Great location.
The bathroom door doesn’t lock. The staff did not fix it and did not provide a solution.

Wonderful
Easy to locate. Near city center.
The room has kettle but not a mug. Our room was near emergency door whereby people started using it when the main lobby was locked, therefore very noisy and honestly a bit concerning for security reason.

Great location, friendly staff
Sound proof was bad, I woke up in the middle of the night due to the cellphone vibration from the other room…
Water running quite small.

The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about the hikes in the area. The place was clean and the lounge room was very warm from the fire and comfortable. Has everything you could need.
