This hotel is a charming stay close to Amsterdam city centre, only 10mins walk from Amsterdam Central station, and from the hotel you can also easily walk to other parts of town such as the Red Light District and then over to Jordaan so very convenient. Staff are also attentive, from the doormen at reception to the waiting staff at the hotel restaurant. For example, when the doorman helped me take my luggage up to my room, he noticed the remote control for the curtains in my room was not working so he went ahead and sent his colleague to fix it without me even having to ask.
As for the rooms, I stayed in the Deluxe Room and it was very spacious, with high ceilings that allowed a lot of natural light into the room. I also thought the Nespresso machine, kettle, and complementary hot beverages/soft drinks/snacks in the room (as well as a fridge) was a really nice touch. The building has a lot of character and interesting features such as a still functioning classic elevator.
I enjoyed the breakfast, with many standard continental breakfast options such as eggs (either scrambled or you could request your eggs to be cooked a certain way which I appreciated), sausage and bacon, bread and pastries, cereal, salad etc. - but they also made sure to rotate certain items everyday which added a nice variety.
I understand that the building is old (being an old shipping house now converted into a hotel) so it is supposed to have a traditional feel, however the interiors still felt outdated and more worn out than I would have expected for a 5-star hotel. I also thought it could have been cleaner. For example, I frequently saw large flies in the hotel restaurant when having breakfast, which detracted from the experience. Another example is in the bathroom in my room, there was a 3-fold bath screen (i.e. it had 3 glass panels which you fold out/extend when taking a shower). However the rubber seal on the final panel already seemed to be broken when I first checked into the room as it had just been left on the side of the bathtub. This meant I was not able to fully extend the screen as only the first two panels 'sealed' onto the side of the tub, and the third panel would hang awkwardly on the end. I therefore had to shower at a certain angle to prevent water spilling outside of the bathtub.
Finally, I was slightly disappointed by the service from one of the women at the front desk - one morning I noticed I had an insect bite on one of my fingers, and I was worried it may be bed bugs since the bite did not look like a typical mosquito/insect bite (although admittedly I can be paranoid about these things as I have unfortunately had historical experience with bed bugs). I went to enquire at the reception desk about the possibility of there being bed bugs and if there was any way they could check my room, but I was simply dismissed and told that the hotel does not have bed bugs, with no further explanation. Even if I was being paranoid, I would have appreciated if they still could have sent someone to help check the room and/or provided further details on the specific measures they take to ensure the absence of bed bugs and overall cleanliness of the hotel, to ease my mind.

Nice personnel and the ambiance is nice (retro). Very helpful. The breakfast was great. Different kind of cooked eggs available (poached, sunny side up etc).
The beds are a bit dated. So I thought it was not very comfortable. It was a bit dark for me, but it is part of the design. Could have been cleaner but it was good nonetheless.

Location and staff
We booked this hotel specifically to use the spa facilities and had an email the day before to say they were closed. I am waiting on some compensation from bookings.com which I sent on Tuesday and email said I would have a response with 24 hours - no response as yet.

Great location, interesting building
Badly run. Lack of management oversight, simple things like no lager beer in bar two nights running, also, the swimming pool was closed. Breakfast order taken then forgotten about. Dinner booking taken even though restaurant was closed. Bill miscalculated.
For the money, you would expect more, but it felt like no one was in charge.
