Excellent location and a lovely building. It was special to be able to stay in a Dutch townhouse right on the canal. The interiors are dramatic and garden was a wonderful oasis of calm in a busy weekend. The staff were very friendly and attentive. and the welcome drink delicious!
Our room was at the top of the building and was very small, and in the mini heatwave this weekend it was slightly uncomfortably hot. The tiny loo and shower room had no extraction and smelt a bit damp. Two washbasins in the main bedroom took up too much of the valuable counter space impacting the utility of the room. It was all about squished for two people with no space to sit, or even open a suitcase.

Beautiful historical hotel, great location, and classy interior. Staff was friendly and very helpful with luggage storage needs, etc.
I guess it may have said this somewhere on Booking, but no AC definitely made my stay a bit less enjoyable. My understanding is that many businesses in historic buildings face the same issue by law. The staff did offer me a fan, which helped and luckily it was nice enough outside to open a window.

Horrible Experience – Stolen Item and No Accountability
I had an extremely distressing experience during my stay at Canal House from August 1–3, 2025. During my stay, a valuable Hermes bracelet (gifted to me by a close friend) went missing from my room. I left it in its original Hermes packaging inside a shopping bag, and upon checkout, I discovered that not only the bracelet but also the box and wrapping had all disappeared.
This is completely unacceptable and deeply upsetting, as the item holds great sentimental and financial value. Despite reporting the issue immediately to the hotel and requesting an urgent investigation with their housekeeping and security teams, I have yet to receive any resolution or assurance that the matter is being properly handled.
A hotel of this supposed standard should ensure guest belongings are safe and secure, but Canal House failed miserably. This experience has left me feeling violated, disappointed, and unwilling to ever return.
If you value your personal belongings and peace of mind, I strongly advise avoiding this hotel.
