As a seven-time visitor to Sri Lanka, I've come to appreciate the peace and serenity of the central highlands. They're relaxation, recharging, wandering the electric-green tea trails, smelling the flowers and listening to the birds sing. Glendevon Bungalow nails it. It perfectly encapsulates the beauty, charm, ease, history, grace and peacefulness of its era and setting. It doesn't hurt that the property has a world-class chef who prepares innovative and delicious meals. Manu, Sashika and all the staff members, many from the surrounding villages, are warm, gracious, professional and hospitable. For a memorable escape, I highly recommend Scottish Planter's (Glendevon) Bungalow!
The property is a bit remote, several kms off the main road on a broken trail, but that makes it even more perfect for those seeking an escape to a perfect little world. And they'll meet you on the main road to drive (or lead) you in.

This is a beautifully restored and furnished colonial bungalow that combined old world charm with modern comforts. The standout was the attentive service and the five-star four-course dinner that was some of the best food we had in our 10 day trip. We enjoyed walking around the grounds and the nearby tea estate. Thank you to the manager, the chefs, and the rest of the staff (including Morgan who took us around) for a memorable stay.
The location is not the most accessible, partly due to cyclone damage, but the staff made it easy for us by arranging a van for the last stretch. We enjoyed the tea factory tour very much, but wish there was tea from the estate we could buy.

Wonderful
Scottish Planter Bungalow was a most memorable stay. Four of us stayed in 7 wonderful places in Sri Lanka and it was at the top of- or near the top - of all of our lists . It felt totally authentic, as if we were on a tea plantation in Sri Lanka many years ago. In fact an elderly staff member called Morgan was the 4th generation to work at the bungalow. The views are incredible. The rooms were very historic and extremely large. There is a back porch overlooking the garden and tea bush-covered hills and a group of 4 or 6 can have breakfast in privacy there. Most important were the activities and the kindness of the staff. It was raining much of the time we were there and the general manager, Manusanka, totally cared for us, so that we could have a good time. He took us to the tea factory nearby and we had a most educational experience and in the afternoon he bravely and kindly took us in the rain for a long hike up and down the tea bush hills, helping us across mud and rivulets.
The only negative was the rain but that was our bad luck.

The property around the bungalow is impeccably maintained and the various trees, shrubs, grasses, plants and flowers all grow with beautiful gusto! The bungalow itself is a moment in time.

We had the pleasure of staying at The Scottish Planters Bungalow – Glendoven in September 2025, and it was truly a highlight of our trip. This beautiful, 140-year-old bungalow has been immaculately preserved, retaining its original flooring, furniture, and architectural charm. The blend of historic elegance with modern comfort made our stay unique and memorable. Our room was clean, spacious, and well-appointed, offering a high level of comfort. The views from the property were stunning, especially in the early mornings and evenings. A real standout was the food—easily five-star hotel quality, beautifully plated and absolutely delicious. The highlight of our mornings was enjoying breakfast on the veranda, overlooking the serene tea plantation. A truly special experience. We were also very impressed with the service, especially from the manager, Manusanka. He was incredibly helpful, even contacting us before our arrival to offer assistance with transport from the railway station. Throughout our journey, he kept in touch to ensure everything went smoothly and that we were comfortable. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience the charm of colonial-era Sri Lanka with the comfort of modern hospitality. This place offers a perfect blend of history, tranquility, and top-tier service.

The moment we arrived, we were greeted by smiling faces and flowers. the staff were so warm and The bungalow itself was charming, with wide veranda where we had our breakfast every day among the tea fields. The beds were impossibly soft, wrapped in fresh linen. Every meal was a delight. The in-house chef, prepared everything from fragrant biryanis and grilled vegetables and local fish seasoned to perfection. the staff specially Mr. Manu made the stay unforgettable their kindness felt genuine, their hospitality effortless.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Scottish Planter Bungalow! The warmth and kindness of the staff made us feel right at home—everyone was so sweet and caring. Although it’s a bit of a drive from Nuwara Eliya, the bungalow offers a peaceful retreat where you can wake up to the sound of birdsong. A heartfelt thank you to the whole team for being so lovely to our little daughter ? If you’re someone who enjoys places with history and charm, the Scottish Planter is a fantastic choice!

We stayed at Scottish Planter – Glendevon Bungalow from April 22–24, 2025, and it was truly one of a kind. Nestled in the tranquil hills of Ragala, this heritage bungalow dating back to 1880 welcomed us with warmth, serenity, and unmatched hospitality. After a long 16-hour journey with my infant son, wife, and mother, we arrived at 10:30 PM — yet everything was perfectly arranged for us, thanks to Manusanka, the ever-gracious property manager. From coordinating a pick-up van for the 1.2 km off-road trail to ensuring we had everything we needed upon arrival, his care made us feel right at home. The bungalow itself is a living piece of history — impeccably maintained, tastefully appointed, and surrounded by lush greenery, landscaped gardens, and the peaceful sounds of nature. The set-course meals were absolutely delicious — every dish was prepared with love and left us wanting more. A special thank you to Kapila, who attended to us throughout our stay with kindness and attentiveness. Whether it was adjusting breakfast to suit our preferences or ensuring we had everything we needed, he truly made a difference. This is a remote getaway, and that’s exactly its charm. Birdsong by day, starry skies by night, and the pure stillness of nature all around — it’s a place to disconnect and truly rejuvenate. We’re grateful for the experience and look forward to returning again. Thank you, Manusanka, for your incredible hospitality — and for the lovely conversations we’ll always remember. Wishing you and the entire Scottish Planter Bungalow team all the very best!

The ambience, the food and hospitality was exceptional. The chef is clearly very skilled at curating delicious dishes made from natural yet simple ingredients. The scenery was amazing, serene and tranquil. Ideal for a relaxing vacation. The staff were very polite, helpful and courteous.
The access road to the bungalow is a little arduous particularly for cars or vehicles with hardly any road clearance. But the property arranges for a shuttle service to take you up and down, so that was indeed useful.

This hotel is something very special. It takes you back in time, offering to stay in a historical place. The food was lovely, and the staff at Scottish Planter Bungalow is another level. We were welcomed so nicely and you could tell that everyone tries their very best to make your stay unforgettable. We are very grateful.
Nothing we did not like, we would just recommend to have a driver taking you up there. The personnel will tell them the exact way, but I honestly would not have liked to drive a car up to the bungalows myself since I’m not used to these a bit more difficult roads as a city person.

Pleasant
Similar to other reviews the place is located in a serene tea plantation. The historical building transports you back in time with furniture and the old pictures. We were surprised with the bill during checkout for snacks they offered before dinner. This is after we paid $64 additional for dinner for all three of us. It is fair to charge us for alcohol but to charge another $60 for snacks when already paid $64, felt like a rip off. Having said that, Mohan and the other caretaker were very helpful and went beyond to make us feel comfortable. Have stayed in several bungalows in Sri Lanka would not return or recommend this, as there will be several hidden charges. Watch out! Upate: The manager reached out to me after this review and refunded the extra charge.

The property and garden is very beautiful and very well-maintained. It's nestled in the mountains away from the hustle and bustle of Nuwaraeliya so if you are looking for a bit of peace and quiet, this is it. The manager, Manu and staff members were very friendly and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. We loved the fact that the staff members were flexible and attentive to our specific needs. We hiked Ravana Rock (moderate intensity, ~2.5 hours total), which is located close to the property. Breakfast By Chef Bandula was exceptional. The milk rice was one of the best we have ever had. The tea was also absolutely perfect. All in all, it was a perfect stay and would love to come back!
The road leading up to the property from the main road isn't in great condition. There are some sections that are bumpy, low and narrow. They have separate parking at a convenient location and they will pick up/ drop off by tuk (we didn't use it) so make sure to inquire about it. There wasn't wifi or a TV in the rooms which could be an issue for some people. Also, if you are looking for activities and fun things to do, things are a bit far from this place so planning ahead is key.

The place was amazing, a bit out of the city, though. The road to the bungalow can be a bit tricky in the dark, but it’s very scenic during the day. Not much going on at night, so definitely wake up early to make the most of it.

We had a wonderful stay at the Scottish Planter Bungalow. The experience was truly memorable, and we enjoyed every moment of it. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the roasted pumpkin soup and the fresh salad at dinner. A special mention to Mr. Thennakoon and Mohan, who were incredibly kind and helpful, ensuring we had a great experience. Their service was excellent. Our room was cozy, and we particularly loved the herbal shower gel made of cinnamon—it had a delightful fragrance. One of the highlights of our stay was the 3km outdoor walk through the tea plantations before breakfast. The scenery was breathtaking, and it made the breakfast even more enjoyable.
However, there were two minor issues we encountered. The Jacuzzi was out of order despite being advertised as available for complimentary use, though we did get to use the sauna. Additionally, we had booked a Farquharson room with one double bed but were given a Macnaughton room with two single beds. While the staff arranged them together, it was not the exact setup we had initially booked. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would love to return. Thank you for the great hospitality!
