Wonderful
The owner Hisayo was so nice and kind to us! The place was amazing and well taken care of. We did not opt for bfast but did get coffee every morning, which was excellent! Truly amazing to be able to stay at a 100yr old ryokan. Location is also great within walking distance of some of the major attractions!
We were on the second floor and the floors were creaky, which made us nervous to make too much sound. The sound carries and we worried about disturbing other guests. The shower was also on the first floor, which isn't convenient for people that don't like stairs.

We loved the traditional beauty of Ryokan Tanoya. Our room was spotless, had all reuired amenities, plus we had an amazing view to a beautiful garden, and was very peaceful. Our host was welcoming, friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast. It's a little out of the way, but easily accessable by bus. It is just a 20 min stroll to Nijo castle, and a 35 min stroll to Kinkaku-ji.
Nothing for us to dislike. It was exactly what we had hoped for.

The place was really lovely to stay in - it felt like a very traditional Japanese home. The room was spacious and had a toilet, sink and mirror attached, the main bathroom was separate but had a full shower room with great shampoo, conditioner and body wash. The place was cleaned daily with new towels each day and your bed made. The owner was lovely and greeted you each time you came back from being out. It rained when we visited and she kindly let us borrow umbrellas. It was a quiet area and the bed was super comfortable.
I didn't realise just how far away from things this stay is. If you don't mind walking to places or paying for a taxi, then it's fine! We found the busses to be too crowded so we would walk to JR Nijo station and take the local trains around the city or to Kyoto station for other train lines. You are also asked to pay an 'accomodation tax' upon arrival which was a surprise - they also asked it to be in cash, so it was lucky I had some on me. Our room was up a very steep set of stairs and the bathroom was down stairs (very private) but just in case you have a disability or can't do stairs - I would let the owner know first.

Beautiful 100-year-old home, filled with beautiful antiquities. So beautiful, it felt like an Asian museum.
We found the location just a little too remote for our purpose. We were visiting Kyoto for the first time, so we were touring daily from one historical site to another, then walking around at night. It would be a beautiful place to slow down and rejuvenate, however, we were geared up for a different type of Kyoto visit.

We had an amazing stay at Tanoya Ryokan. We felt so welcomed and the owner arranged a cake for my husbands 30th birthday which was a wonderful touch. Absolutely loved the experience of staying in a Ryokan and the garden & style of this Ryokan was stunning. I would highly recommend this place!

Wonderful
Very restful decoration that alluded to the history of the neighborhood and yet was fully functional. Lovely Japanese breakfast, tasty and filling. Fantastic tea available in the morning if you remember to ask. We had the ground floor room with two single beds and a nice view into the pocket Japanese garden plus comfortable chairs to rest and relax in the view. Bathroom facilities as one would expect in Japan, high quality. Super quiet at night.
Actually, very little. Access to the Kyoto buses (generally very useful) is not instant (5-10' walk needed). Immediate neighborhood is residential (so not a party place, not masses of ) but the entertainment areas of Kyoto accessible by taxi at reasonable rates.

The hotel room was exceptionally clean and had an amazing view of a small, private Japanese garden. The room was very very clean, and was tidied up daily - with all the amenities and water bottles replaced too. We appreciated the daily water so much after long days of walking! The best part was the shower.... it was to die for!
The location is tucked away in a neighborhood, so not very close to the tourist attractions but we did not mind this since Kyoto is so large, there is likely no perfect location. We really enjoyed staying in a non-touristy neighborhood and we had the chance to try authentic restaurants in the area because of this -which we absolutely loved (some of the best places we went in all of Japan).

We wanted a true, quiet-retreat ryokan in a family neighborhood so we could really get a taste of life in this wonderful country. This is not the place if youre looking for the bright lights of downtown Kyoto, but when we wanted the bright lights, it was super easy to get anywhere we wanted. We got the garden-view room which was plenty big for three friends traveling together and the most wonderful welcome and care from the staff. 10+++
Nothing. We loved coming back in the late afternoon or evening to a beautifully clean room with a lovely garden view just to slip into our ryokan-supplied traditional Japanese pajamas.
