Tanaka-ya was excellent. Well situated, clean and comfortable, with a very friendly and helpful owner. It was certainly the perfect home base for us to explore Gion and Kyoto from. Rooms are spacious and comfortable while still providing the traditional japanese ryokan experience. Facilities were also clean and well kept. If I find myself in Kyoto again I will certainly be looking to stay at Tanaka-ya.

The owner was very lovely.
Thank you for gifting me a bowl of fruit. They were delicious and came at the most perfect time. Very thoughtful.
The location was wonderful.
I really enjoyed being in a traditional house and being immersed in the culture.
My friend didn't sleep well on the floor, but then I enjoyed sleeping on the tatami matts, so I guess it's a personal preference.
The house is old, so the floorboards creak, and the walls are thin, so be prepared to hear other guests, but it's all part of the charm.

The most comfortable spacious tatami room in a quiet traditional area surrounded by many small restaurants and bars. A lovely neighbourhood for exploring. Host is most gracious.

Location is excellent central to everything, host Tamie san is sweet and helpful, authentic ryokan in historic Kyoto.
Low door frames, thin mattress, sharing bathrooms. This was more us being tall, old and stiff, finding it hard to get up off the floor in the mornings and thinking we could cope with sharing bathroom. No reflection on the wonderful host or the lovely old property.

We loved our stay at Tanaka-ya. It is very quite and a lovely old Japanese house. Sharing the shower and a bathroom was no problem at all. There was also free tea and some fruits for us waiting after the day!

Super cute with a good location and great value. The host was also awesome and very sweet.
It is small housing for a tall person but the room was really open and nice!

Tanaka-Ya had a wonderful location closeby to many of the attractions in the city. Everything was within walking distance and the accommodations provided were wonderful.
Don't have much to say on what I didn't like.
