Very friendly staff- helpfull. Room was big and AC worked fine. We got help and suggestions with attractions. Their onsen was great. Great location for local bus travel. Great area to stay.

Super cute and clean room with a HUGE soaking tub! Our room was through a little outdoor garden path which was adorable. As the walkway was semi outdoors, a huge cicada decided to take up residence outside my door and fly into my face and the brave front desk woman came and grabbed it with her hand and rescued me! She and I had a great laugh about it afterwards. Every staff member I interacted with was an absolute delight and the location was perfect! I wish we could have stayed longer!
My husband and I are quite tall (5'11 and 6'2) and there was a low-ish beam on one side our room we had to be a little carefully not to bump our heads on. Fortunately it was over the sitting/table area where we weren't walking much!

The staff at the Kyoto Ryokan Sakanoue are the shining stars of this property. The kindness and willingness to help of all staff member make this property an excellent hotel. The location in a quiet neighborhood also make this hotel the place to be. It is a beautiful quiet neighborhood but about 15 walk to a really lively nightlife. We felt safe walking everywhere in Kyoto even at night making this an ideal location to get the best of both worlds. The main tourist shopping area in the historic district of Kyoto is a few blocks away. We walked to a few quaint speakeasys across the river which we really enjoyed. Also, they provided umbrellas on rainy days - this seems simple but really made a difference for us. Breakfast was good but did not have a huge variety for western choices. The Asian breakfast was beautifully presented, it just wasn’t our preference for a morning meal, not to say that many people wouldn’t enjoy it. In room, we were provided a refrigerator and alcoholic beverages, additionally you are given two bottles of water daily.
The decor is very simple, not luxurious. The price was the most expensive of all the hotels we visited during a 5 week trip but was not the most luxurious. We would still stay here because of staff and location, just don’t expect luxury.

Great location in Kyoto. Beautiful rooms with very comfortable beds and a large private bath with a huge bathtub. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious.

We had a wonderful stay at this ryokan in Kyoto. The atmosphere is incredibly calm and peaceful, perfect for relaxing after exploring the city. The rooms are spacious, spotless, and very comfortable. The location is excellent and convenient to discover Kyoto while still feeling quiet and authentic.
One of the highlights was the traditional Japanese breakfast served every morning — beautifully prepared and different every day, which made the experience feel very special and authentic.
The staff was also very welcoming and attentive throughout our stay. We would definitely come back and highly recommend this ryokan to anyone looking for a serene and traditional Kyoto experience.

All are inclusive, which are nice. Staff members are friendly but better to hire someone whose speaking is good enough either in Japanese or English.
Only the downside was that the reception desk had many scratches. It would give a negative impression when you first walk.
