One of our favorite stays in all of Japan. Beautifully and tastefully decorated, very comfortable futons with down duvets, huge showers, and the owner was exceptionally kind and helpful and gave us great recs. Great quiet location and easy to bike or bus to everything. Would absolutely stay again.

Staying at Rakucho Ryokan in Kyoto was an absolute highlight—every detail of the space is impeccably clean, thoughtfully designed, and intuitively arranged so everything feels effortless, simple, and perfectly placed for comfort and ease. I had the deepest, most restorative sleep every night, and truly some of the best moments of my trip were spent enjoying the calm, beautifully considered atmosphere. With its ideal walking distance to stunning botanical gardens, the river, charming coffee spots, shopping streets, and authentic local restaurants, it’s become one of our favorite places to stay in Kyoto—far beyond just its great value.

Clean and relaxing atmosphere. Owner is friendly and welcoming, taking time to point out recommendations in the area and best access to transportation. He would often greet me when I was heading out or coming back in.
Shared bathrooms are individual, lockable rooms (3 single toilet rooms, 4 single shower rooms) and are kept clean.
Very reasonable price.
Liked the interior decor—simple, but with beauty in the subtle details.
Although the location is farther from Kyoto station, it has great bus access and is not too far from the subway station (Kitaoji). We frequently used both during our stay. I liked that it was in a quieter neighborhood and enjoyed walking along the Kamo river or Tadasu forest in the mornings.
The air conditioners are a little noisy, but to combat the uncomfortable heat in summer, it can’t be helped. There is a remote to adjust them if needed, though.

The room was spacious and futon very comfortable. It was clean and the staff was friendly and kind. He gave me lots of tips and recommendations that made my trip even better. When you arrive there, you realize that the ryokan is better and more beautiful than you saw previously on photos
There is nothing wrong, maybe just the location. You have to get the bus in order to move somewhere because it is not in the downtown. However, it is well located if you are looking for a quiet neighborhood.

The host was incredibly kind and went out of his way to make us comfortable. All facilities were clean. Beautiful traditional Japanese style with the comfort of modern AC, toilets, laundry, and showers. The host even helped us call a taxi for us and translated where we wanted to go. There was a generously sized storage closet in our room that accommodated our luggage. A great way to experience a more calm Kyoto, but bus access to more touristy sites. A true Ryokan experience at a hostel price.
Nothing, we loved everything! If you want to go to Fushimi Inari make sure to book out some time because it is a little ways away, but personally we enjoyed this as it allowed us to stay in a calmer neighbourhood.

Host is very hospitable and knows a lot about the area. Very close to a bus stop that will get you basically anywhere in the city! The traditional Japanese style rooms made the experience of being in Kyoto feel so magical!

It was so clean and beautiful! The owner is so accommodating to all my requests (which is embarrassing for me because I don’t request stuff usually) and he is very helpful. It is very near to bus stations and the train. The host also shows recommendations of the nearest shops/restaurants/establishments near the property
If you want to be very near to the city center, this place is still quite far.

Our host was incredible, the ryokan was very comfortable, common spaces and bathrooms were clean, and we were provided with everything we needed. Location was not a problem for us, as there is a lot to do in the northern part of town as well and its quiet.
Can't think of one negative thing about our stay.

Beautiful rooms with really great facilities - so clean - so peaceful - everything was perfect. It was in a really nice part of Kyoto which was super quiet but great to walk around and the area around the river is really beautiful and peaceful. The host is so welcoming and kind and makes you feel very at home and has great recommendations in the area. Getting to all tourist sites/ busy city area is very easy on the bus/ train.

It may be annoying for some to have shared bathrooms, but i never had to wait to use them, there are plenty for everyone.

The owner was super friendly and welcoming.
The location was perfect for us- near transit but not in the busy area. Convenience store and restaurants nearby, as well as the lovely river.
The room was great and the shared showers and toilets were plentiful and clean.
The walls are thin as it’s a traditional building but it didn’t bother us as we were tired after busy days then up early anyway.
I would stay here again if (when!) I come back to Kyoto.

Loved my stay at Rakucho.
It was so comfortable, very clean and homely and the host was lovely, very welcoming.
The Ryokan is in a quiet neighborhood with a bus stop just found the corner. The 204, 205 or the 206 bus will take you just about anywhere in Kyoto....so easy to get around. Loved the canal just over the road lined with cherry blossoms.
Nothing to complain about. Our stay was lovely.

If you are looking for a traditional Japanese hostel, this is the perfect place! The bedroom, toilets and showers are very clean and spacious. The host is super friendly and helpful, he gave us a warm welcome.
The hostel is not in the middle of the city centre. Although, for us this was not a problem at all. There are several bus stops around the hostel so it is easy to go to the centre. There are enough restaurants in the neighbourhood as well.

Very clean and comfortable; shared showers and toilets were kept beautifully clean. Wifi was excellent and the futon beds and pillows were also very comfortable. Although not in the centre of Kyoto, the bus and train stations are very close and everything is easily reached by public transport. It was also very calm and quiet. A shared kitchen area was also available.
Only downside was the large traditional window did not have curtains so was very light in the morning so bring an eye mask if light bothers you.
