The owner/manager was very kind and welcoming. Understanding the type of a facility this is, the shared space was all clean and maintained. I'm not sure how many other lodgers were staying at the time, but we were never waiting or competing for a sink or shower or toilet, all of which were clean and modern within the older architecture of the house itself. The room itself was very spacious and had some hanging and storage for clothes or whatever else we'd want to unpack. Temperature control was very strong in the room, well appreciated in the hot muggy summer. Opening our window in the early, still-cool, morning let me enjoy the sunshine and a back garden while sipping provided green tea. It's fairly accessible to Kyoto subway transit, roughly ~10 minute walk. Additionally, there are several eateries and other shopping nearby, although we mostly didn't explore the immediate area. The one place we went was the izakaya Yamaga, one of the recommended dining options by the manager. The food there was excellent and a great atmosphere.
Not much. It was sometimes difficult to navigate because of my size relative to the architecture (I'm 6' 3"), but that was to be expected. The main shared toilet we used didn't seem to have temperature control in that room so it got hot during the day.

Beautiful building with lovely garden and japanese rooms. Very clean and comfortable. I loved sleeping on futons - they improved my back pain a lot. Host is extremely helpful and polite and helped give us information about the area and assisted us to plan our trip around the typhoon which was about to hit Kyoto. Thank you so much.

I like its Japanese style. I like the shared toilets and the showers. They are new and clean. I like the location at the end. It made me see the whole Kyoto city. I like the three beds room. There is a round table for us to sit and talk.

Nice ryokan. The host was nice and helped me to carry my 18kg luggage up the stairs. Shared bathrooms are only available on 1 floor so you will need to walk down. Nevertheless, the bathrooms were clean and had high water pressure! You can wash your laundry at a fee. The cut-off time for using the machine is 830pm. The host gave me a map of the area and where are the nearby eateries. I went to one of his recommended places for ramen and the meal was really good! There is a nearby bus stop where you can easily get to some of the main attractions in Kyoto directly. There's a lift at the Kitayama Station so make sure to use it if you're taking a heavy luggage. Cuz you will need to walk for about 10 minutes from the station to the ryokan. I didn't see the lift and eventually had to drag the 18kg luggage up the long staircases. Overall I like my 2 nights stay at Rakucho Ryokan!
Probably there isn't any bathroom upstairs. There's a toilet so I guess it's still fine. Since it's a ryokan so the sound proof isn't that good. You need to walk about 5 mins to get to 711.

Beautiful accommodations in a traditional Japanese home style ryokan. Big rooms, clean and very well organized. The shower and toilets nicely appointed in separate private rooms. The owner is super friendly and helpful. The management of the suites and property is excellent!
The common area is a bit small but is very efficient, tidy and clean.

The host was welcoming and ready to help, he was flexible for our checking time and replied quickly to our messages. The room decoration was as it is shown in the pictures.

We loved everything about this little gem of a home away from home. we picked the location to explore areas in the region and the host generously shared with us some of his favourite restaurants and Izakayas. they were great. if you expect to be in the centre of the tourist area this is not your place. if you want to experience the old world a little in a beautiful house in a quiet neighbourhood (close on bus to main attractions) this could be your place.
we were shocked at how comfortable the futons were. they had latex top padding and the pillows seemed extra amazing and comfortable. the little Zen garden was unexpected. I love the smell of wood and the gentle feeling of the house
we loved everything. its very good value. just make sure you read carefully what they offer so your expectations are met

Clean room and bedding. Shared washrooms were very modern and clean. Toilets and showers separated. Subway was a little walk away but a main line bus for many main locations steps away. Host was very friendly and helpful. Great for a traditional ryokan stay.
Creaky wooden stairs, was not a problem for me as my room was to next to the stairs but care needs to be taken to not bother other guests. A reminder to be cautious of your noise is not a bad thing overall.
