Perfect stay. The room felt more like a hotel than a hostel. It was modern, spotless, and very comfortable. The common areas, kitchen, and lounge were excellent, the staff were friendly, and the check in and check out process was smooth and efficient. Amazing value, especially if you book a private room.
Nothing. It exceeded my expectations.

Very Good
Piece Hostel Sanjo is a good choice for travelers looking to stay in the heart of Kyoto. The location is excellent, within walking distance of shopping areas, restaurants, public transportation, and many popular attractions, making it very convenient for exploring the city.
The hostel is clean and comfortable. The rooms are well-maintained and offer good value for money.
Overall, a pleasant experience, and I would recommend it to travelers who prioritize a great location and an affordable stay in Kyoto.

The staff is so kind and accommodating and we ended up getting our room upgraded for free which was such a plus! The room itself is super clean and comfortable. They also have available free extra pillows and shower slippers during our stay. There’s also a rooftop terrace, a lounge area beneath the lobby, and a smoking area directly outside the lounge which made our stay a lot better!

Poor
It’s a very beautiful hostel. They had live music, breakfast was good.
As a solo female traveler, I specifically booked the women’s only room. On the 2nd night of a 4 night stay, one of the other guests in the room brought in a man at 4 am. I asked them to leave the room myself on 2 separate occasions. I notified the front desk around 7 am. I then left for the morning, and returned around 12:30 pm to see that the man was back in the female only dorm again. I’m extremely disappointed in how the staff handled the entire situation and how it was not being taken seriously, especially because it happened several times in the same day. I felt incredibly unsafe thereafter and anxious and was surprised that they continued to allow both of the other guests to stay, even though they completely disregarded the rules and safety of every other woman staying in that room. The man that was in the room literally tried to run away to the other building across the street (also part of the hostel) when he saw me go back into the room and the front desk staff chased him. They basically just said they talked to him and assured he would not enter the room again. (One of the other women staying kept letting him in)
It’s a very nice hostel otherwise, the staff were friendly, the food was good, and there are lots of people staying and they make it easy to socialize, however every part of that is overshadowed by this seriously lapse in judgement and safety concern. I was assured that it was the first time it ever happened and they would revise their policies and have better policies in place moving forward, but it doesn’t change how they handled the situation when it occurred.

This hostel was more like a hotel. Very clean. Well laid out. Well run. Great location. Travelling alone, I booked a private room including walk-in shower and toilet. I didn't spend much time there so though small, the room was fine. It had a small refrigerator which was great when I brought home pre-cooked meals which are easy to find in Kyoto. I could store the food before eating it and store leftovers if I chose to. The laundry in the basement was easy to run and inexpensive. Love that the soap auto-loads and is included in the price of a wash for 300 Yen. Breakfast was very much like a European pension where you have a choice of hard boiled eggs (in Japan they are soft boiled), pastry, yogurt, granola and good coffee. Again, inexpensive and the breakfast dining area is airy, green and pleasant. What's more, they had a live musician during happy hour on multiple nights. There is a also a rooftop open air bar / seating area. The walls surrounding the roof seating area are so high you can't see out so it feels a little closed off, but the open sky is nice and the spot is conducive to relaxed conversation. The location is a 3 minute walk from some of the most popular market halls and 10 minutes walk from major shopping like Uniqlo's main store in Kyoto. I rented a bicycle 5 minutes walk from the hostel. It was inexpensive and an awesome way to see the city. Finally, hostel staff was consistently super nice and happy to help. Overall - the experience was 10 out of 10.
High walls surrounding the rooftop seating area.

Good
Convenient bustling location in Kyoto. Kitchen and public space if you feel like using it. Laundry in the basement was great to have access to and the amenities of the room were great.
Definitely feels like a hostel in terms of many international + younger travelers. The rooms have some sound leakage- nothing major that disturbed my sleep but can definitely hear other people as they are coming and going.

Great location, super helpful staff, lovely common areas and great facilities
The room was small and quite airless without aircon on but for the price and perfect location it was good value. I'd book again

Good
Common areas were well maintained and spacious.
The room is probably good for a single person. We found it very cramped with a very inconvenient design. In addition mandatory survey during checkin was very long asking for very personal details and I didn’t have to fill anything like that in any other hotels.

It’s everything we wanted. Clean, good beds, the staff was amazing, the common spaces are really cool/comfortable:have a good vibe, and the location is very central. Good value for the price too.

We stayed in the family room and loved it. The room was as expected but the community spaces were above and beyond. We stayed on the west side and loved having the full kitchen and two community spaces. Location was perfect!
I feel like I say this in every review, but the beds are firm in Japan. This place is no exception. This is an extremely personalized thing, but I wish they were just a tad softer, like maybe a thin topper would make a huge difference. But for a hostel, this was exceptional.

Wonderful
It's right in the center of Kyoto, so it's very accessible and you can easily get around the area. The location offers some great restaurants nearby. We stumbled across one near the hostel that was amazing. The rooms are small but very clean and comfortable. We got a private room with a bathroom, which made getting ready a lot easier. The breakfast is quite standard as they offer an array of items (although it's the same every morning). Lastly, the staff were really accommodating as they helped us find local sightseeing activities and helped us book taxi rides.
