I stayed here twice, because I liked it so much. Super friendly hostel with other travelers - you still have to be willing to start a conversation - great AC in July. I used the luggage storage after check out and was able to use the kitchen/dining facilities as well, which I really appreciated. Good central location near Kyoto Station.
Maybe a hook in the downstairs, ground floor restroom so there is a place to hang up a bag or purse? Maybe a few more hooks in the private rooms? There was no freezer in the shared kitchen, but you could give an item to the staff to put in their freezer.

I loved Piece Hostel. During my trip, I stayed in 3 different places - a hotel near Shijo that was work-related, another was a traditional ryokan that I had booked for the end of my stay and Piece Hostel. I liked Piece Hostel the best. It was clean, modern, had a spacious community area with a kitchen and full stove, microwave etc., clean filtered water, laundry area, outside garden courtyard with seats, central AC, even a big bathtub with different bath salts!
It was centrally located - a flat walk from Kyoto Station IF you took the right exit. Kyoto Station is a beast. Trying to find the right exit to get to Piece Hostel was a bit challenging. Even using Google Maps, it's difficult because there are many buildings and the navigation is not as great underground in the station... and it's not as well-signed for the East Exit as it could be. For going on trips or bus tours outside of Kyoto, Piece Hostel had a great location.
I had a private room, which does not provide a lot of luggage space. The room is taken up mostly by the bed, but the room has a little sink which is so convenient and a hair dryer. Also, there was a TV, though I didn't use it much.
There is an elevator, so you do not have to lug luggage up and down the stairs. The showers and bathtub are on the ground floor, but each floor has its own restroom and sink area.
The staff was very nice and friendly. Another plus is that Piece Hostel puts together binders of useful information including restaurant recommendations and has brochures/flyers with info about markets, etc. Travelers here are friendly. I met some wonderful people the second day and explored the city with them.
I don't know or maybe didn't notice if there was information about the Gion Festival. There may have been, but at another place I stayed, there was a big flyer with dates and events for the entire month of July put out by the Kyoto Tourism bureau. If I had seen a flyer, it would have helped me plan some of my time better when I came back to Kyoto... but oh well... there was one day that they were doing float pulling practice, which I would have liked to have seen. You can't modify the AC, because it's central, but on the plus side, it means that all the common areas inside have AC - this means the kitchen and dining area are comfortable.
In the directions, there was a Google Map, but I would have loved to have step by step directions from inside Kyoto Station from the shinkansen or the Central Exit areas... Because of Google Maps not always being clear esp. in big stations, a written set of directions could have helped - like go towards signs for the Avanti Building... the street Piece Hostel is on looks like a tiny alley not a real street, so it's easy to miss the turn, but the little street is just past the Guinness sign.

The beds were incredibly comfortable, the hostel was spotless and it had nice hang out areas. It's the nicest hostel I have ever stayed in and I have been in over 200 hostels.

The location is great, the staff was very kind and the common space comfortable
There was a really bad smell in the room we stayed, we just stayed for a short night but it was almost unbearable even with the window open. If we had stayed longer we would have rather left or asked for another room. It felt very uncomfortable and made us wonder if the room is properly clean or not. The problem is that we had the same issue with the other Piece hotel in Sanjo so we wonder if it's the case in most of the rooms.

This was such a beautiful and clean hostel! My husband and I booked a private room, which was very small, but it was comfortable, and we had our own sink. The bathrooms were readily available, and we never had difficulties finding a shower. My son stayed in a dorm room and said he slept better there than he had the whole trip. I appreciate hostels, because I like having a refrigerator and kitchen available for my use. This one was never crowded. The location was within close walking distance to Kyoto Station, but it was tucked into a quiet corner without a lot of outside noise.
Although the hostel was conveniently located to Kyoto Station, it was rather inconveniently located for most of the sightseeing that we had planned. We had to take 2 trains or a train and a bus to reach most popular tourist spots (Nijo Castle, Gion, Nishiki Market, Pontocho Alley, etc.), and on more than one occasion we chose to order an Uber rather than waiting in the long bus line.

Very Good
Space had a somewhat "just works" atmosphere. Communal spaces were nice to hang out it, facilities were really clean, staff was nice. Location was the biggest seller for us, but everything else about our stay lived up to the same level of satisfaction for us.

Very Good
- location: close to train station and shinkansen, quiet area
- bathroom: right in front of our room, nicely close
- staff: kind and helpful, spoke english and stored our bags before check-in and after check-out
- facilities: during our stay, the elevator was broken down, which did not make the third floor climb up and down great. however, they did offer a soft drink on the house and offered to carry our luggages up.
- showers: only located on the ground floor, a bit awkward to go from the third floor and have to push a buttom constantly to keep the waterflow
