Our stay at Laforet was an amazing experience, which was surprising since we didn't know much about this Hotel/Ryokan and were looking for more of an authentic Ryokan experience. The hotel straddles the line between hotel and ryokan but I would say it felt way more like a ryokan. We had a personal Onsen bath on the balcony which felt great after a long day of activity and hiking. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, and the staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. The food (dinner and breakfast) was very good and I highly recommend it, especially dinner. I would also recommend their newer building as a place to stay since it is more updated than the main although the main building still looks amazing. The location is away from the crowds and main area which makes for very quiet evenings. We walked their with our carry on and bags which was about 20 minutes, uphill, but they also provide free shuttle at certain times. Make sure to check out the many amenities they have on site as well. Overall, you will love this place.
The beds are a bit firm, so if you aren't a fan of that it may feel uncomfortable. Getting to Laforet can be a bit tricky of a walk from the main area as it's all uphill, but keep in mind they have a shuttle and it's worth it.

Staff incredibly nice and accomodating. They helped arrange for our shuttle to the station and went over train schedules. The room was very clean. I did think it was going to be larger but it was fine. I tried the onsen one night and it was nice.
I thought it may have been a bit pricey but I knew that when I reserved. . We chose not to eat there because it was too expensive.

Very Poor
Close to nothing. The rooms were clean.
Our worst hotel in Japan by far. Expensive, horrible food, completely unaccessible (no transport to the hotel, you have to walk uphill with your luggage 25 minutes from the closest train stop).
The Onsens are separated for men and women so if you are a couple you cannot bathe together.
The room view was a crumbling wall.
Half board was ridiculous - dinner was minuscule three dishes, trying to act like a three star Michelin restaurant but all you get is leaving hungry.
Wifi didn’t work most of the time.

Wonderful
Peaceful and modern Japanese design with spa-like public onsens (soaps and lotions smelled incredible), beautiful views from the dining room and stylish but comfortable common area. Rooms were well-appointed and views from balcony were gorgeous; private onsen very nice. Breakfast was very tasty and had a nice blend of Japanese and European/American fare.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay but sharing a few points for potential improvement: Check in process was laborious (self-check-in screens and had to enter info/passports for adults and children); Our room was in a separate building of hotel (not far, but felt detached from the main hotel and weren’t provided long robes to walk over to onsen); rooms were a bit cramped with the extra bed brought in (that is totally on us); would have loved if could look out at valley from private onsen on balcony (privacy screen prevented).
Husband said the men’s public onsen could use some work on surrounding garden vibe (air conditioner, not attractive garden). Women’s side was lovely (pretty flowering tree, fountains, etc), but garden could use some tending/weeding. Location is a bit further up the hill than expected, so 15 min walk down to town and a bit of a work out back up. Staff weren’t very interactive or attentive once checked in.

The rooms were comfortable and large with a nice public onsen on the ground floor. And the dinners were really good.
Not a thing!

Pleasant
Amazing hotel and amazing room with balcony bath.
We booked a while ago and paid for dinner. We were never explained how to redeem it and they never brought it up. Took our money for a service they never provided.

Disappointing
The location was good and staff extremely efficient and courteous
I am extremely disappointed with my recent stay. For a rate of nearly $500 per night, the set course meals are expensive Yen 28000 I expected a level of service and amenities that matched the price. Instead, the hotel charged for basic essentials such as ice, Coke, and even water. They did not provide complimentary water beyond the initial bottles, nor did they offer additional amenities without extra fees.
This felt like a clear mismatch between the cost of the stay and the value provided. Charging premium prices while nickel‑and‑diming guests for basic necessities is unacceptable. I am requesting that Booking.com review this property’s practices and consider compensation for the poor value and experience.

It was a beautiful property and I liked that they had you take off your shoes to store in a locker. I also liked that they sanitized your luggage wheel to keep the facility clean. The dinner that is included with the price was phenomenal. Truly exceptional—one of the best meals I had in Japan.
I didn’t like that there’s no air conditioning in the rooms because it’s winter. It was incredibly hot and uncomfortable. I don’t understand how the hotel can be cool but they’ll turn off the air conditioning in the rooms. For the cost, they should have functioning air conditioning year round.

Disappointing
Have to pay for ice.
Light in the bathroom is on a sensor that cannot be turned off, so wakes you up if you go at night.
Included dinner is fancy, but just ok give the price.
Common onset is very small compared to cheap public facilities.
Dinner is hard to reserve at a specific time. Kid dinner is very complex, even for our reasonably adventurous eaters.
Nice hotel, but give the price, expectations were very different.

Wonderful
Amazing spa-like retreat in a gorgeous quiet setting in the hills of Gora. Exceptionally clean and serene facilities - from the second you walk in (you have to remove your shoes and are not allowed to wear them anywhere in the hotel). The included meals were amazing, and the relaxation of the onsen was perfect for the middle of our trip!
It was raining during our stay, so taxis were no where to be found and the shuttle service to the station only ran during certain hours. This meant we were stuck walking 15 minutes in the rain to the nearest lunch spots outside the hotel.

The overall experience at staying at this hotel was top notch. From the pleasant check in experience, to the pre fix dinner that was amazing, to the onsen, and the following morning breakfast buffet. The rooms were huge and clean. Really exceeded in every way. Add the charm of Hakone, and this short trip will be memorable to our family!

Good
The hotel was nice and spacious
There was mold all over the place. I had touched the towel rack and my hand was left with mold residue. I then continued looking around the room and there was indeed mold in various locations. For the price of the stay there where serious concerns about cleanliness

A beautiful stay in the mountains to relax after days of walking in the city! Having an onsen in our private room was amazing! The room is spacious and clean. The staff is so welcoming and professional. We paid for dinner which I highly recommend as many restaurants are not nearby or open in the evening. The included breakfast was superb! Such a highlight of our trip!
