Location was fantastic. The staff are kind, friendly, willing to help, and eager to make your stay the most comfortable it can be. The ryokan is easy to find; steps away from a bus stop or just down the road from the train station. I appreciated that there was a free shuttle that would come get us from the station if needed - please be sure to let them know in advance.
Check-in was very easy, even with a slight language barrier. Everything was explained so we understood how to use the personal and public baths, where to find our meals, and that we could wear our comfy provided lounge wear. I love knowing what to expect when coming to a resort like this. We were then shown to our lovely and super comfortable rooms, shown how to use the in room onsen, and told to relax until dinner.
Everyting is clean, well maintained, and pleasant. We loved relaxing in the tatami room down on the lower floor. We loved the sound of rushing river just outside our window. We loved the glorious feeling of soaking in the steamy onsen. We enjoyed every bite of our amazing meals. I loved that the staff helped me find my way in to town for shopping. We loved our samue; my toddler was so happy that she got to have some "grown up" clothes like the rest of us. She even got her own kid sized house slippers!
The only thing I wish was available was some sort of outdoor area for my toddler. The ryokan is very family friendly and very welcoming for my toddler, but other than soaking in the bath, there was little else for her to do on site. Perhaps more books in the tatami room, or even a swing out in the courtyard would have been nice. However, that is only adding a wish to what was a perfect stay. I wouldn't really change a thing; we had such a lovely time.

Beautiful setting. The in-room onsen was blissful and we used it multiple times. The traditional dinner was exquisitely presented and included a vegetarian option for one of our family by request. This is an older hotel but very comfortable. Got an amazing shiatsu massage. Hotel staff was also gracious to shuttle us to the nearby Kowakidani station.
The carpet is showing its age and the hotel rooms could use some updating but everything is well maintained and very clean. If traditional Japanese cuisine is not your thing then it’s wasted.

Our room was sublime. It was as close to heaven as I could imagine. The dinners were some of the best food we've eaten during our entire trip to Japan. The staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful.

Wonderful
Great location, excellent staff & service, comfortable / large room with hot tub, shuttle van available for local transport. The public onsen was very nice and well maintained. The view from the room to the creek below was nice, and we could hear the running water. Everything was spotless clean. We had a large bathroom. Our stay included a full Japanese Dinner and Breakfast. They have a very nice dining area. The service was good. It's hard to judge how good the food was as we are not Japanese, however, we enjoyed it a lot. It was authentically traditional Japanese which is what we wanted / expected. The Hotel & Dining easily accommodated one dietary request without any fuss.
The hotel is not new but very well maintained. Our room decor / furniture was vintage 40's US / or English (or older) and not the most comfortable & more ornate vs. functional. The bath was nice but the elevated marble floor with a clear glass wall looking into the living room was very odd. The Hotel layout is long and narrow and I think 5 floors high, and we used the stairs instead of the slow single elevator. While a nice stay, there are so many other interesting nice places to stay in Hakone for a Ryokan experience we'd probably explore another more central to the town of Gora.

The granite onsen bath in the room was quite enjoyable. The bus stop was next to the hotel. The view and sound of the river was great.
The bath being in the room next to the bedroom made the bedroom a little warmer at night than we like. Opening the bedroom windows helped to cool the room down. The air conditioner was not very effective,

This place checks all the boxes for a relaxing, beautiful stay that makes you feel well-taken care of. We had booked a room with a private bath, which turned out to be a lovely stone bath separated from the bathroom by a door, so that the main room didn’t steam up. It was amazing to take an early-morning soak while enjoying the mountainside view out the open-air window! Dinner and breakfast were delicious and filling, served in private rooms within the dining space. And when I ran up a fever from traveling, the kind staff provided an OTC ibuprofen to help me while I looked for a pharmacy. All in all, thank you Hakone Nanase for a wonderful experience!

Very Good
The private bath was lovely. The room was quite large and the view of the forest was lovely. Staff were very kind and helpful. We had the half board and enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. Nice variety of pillows and the provided robe was very comfortable.
Very thing was perfectly fine at the hotel, but it all seemed a bit on the older side, which I didn’t expect for the price.

Very Good
Our room was right next to the falls, which made it really relaxing to listen to. The food was excellent. While some reviews mention it might not suit Western palates, it is definitely very good by Asian standards. The location is secluded and surrounded by mountains, making it perfect for a peaceful getaway. Just a heads up, if you are walking down from the train station, it can be a bit unsafe, so I recommend arranging a ride with the hotel for pick up and drop off
Our room had a musty smell. They could probably improve it by adding a dehumidifier, and the toilet could use a deodorizer.

10/10.
Rooms, onsens, facilities.
Don’t forget to contact the property prior your arrival for a ride from the Kowakudani station.
The walking to the hotel is not safe as the road is narrow. But rather than that excellent service.
