Wonderful
Fantastic location, hotel with a history, authentic rooms, Onsen with sauna and cold tub, and the most precious for us was amazing Japanese garden ❤️
Japanese restaurant for dinner is serving just a set menu and way overpriced

The On Sen was great. The views and gardens beautiful. Room was excellent. Dinner on the dining room was wonderful. Bakery great with reasonable priced coffee.
The coffee in the sit down hotel area was very expensive. Don’t understand why 4 cups of coffee was$45 and didn’t offer same pastries as your onsite bakery.

Wonderful
The breakfast was delicious, plentiful, and very nicely presented. Service was gracious and timely. The restaurant where breakfast was taken was elegant and atmospheric. Highly recommended breakfast.
We really enjoyed the onsen and facilities on the top floor, as well as the large bathtub in the hotel room with plumbed hot spring water. The amenities in the room were great, including robes, slippers, pajamas, coffee and tea making, bottled water, individually packaged toiletries of all sorts, and a very comfortable bed. Air conditioning worked well too!!
There are three different bus stops just steps from the hotel, as well as the train about a 5-7min walk. Very convenient for arriving without a car, and convenient for doing the "Golden Route" from the hotel with public transportation. All of the main Hakone sights were accessible from the hotel's location, but in a quiet town without a crazed tourist vibe. There were some small local restaurants near the hotel, as well as a bakery and convenience store.
The hotel staff was efficient, helpful, and friendly. Lovely Japanese gardens on the property.
The portions for dinner in two different hotel restaurants were quite small. Expensive is fine if worth it, but the dinner options did not offer value for the money.

The breakfast was great and the dining room was also great. The room lacked a view. The property is generally nice, classic but a little dated.
room with a view.

A wonderful historical hotel in the middle of the Hakone region. Service was excellent, staff was impeccable, and we enjoyed the old-fashioned feeling the place gives.

Gorgeous historic buildings with beautiful garden and mountain setting.
Japanese and French set meals and dining rooms looked much more elegant and lively than the Cascade Western dinner.

Beautiful property with everything you need on site, but a bus stop right out front to sightsee!
The only thing I could complain about was that the beds were stiff as a board, which is not a personal preference.

Everything about this property was fantastic
One of the patrons told us that we couldn’t use the onsen because we had tattoos. I hadn’t known this and didn’t see any signs or notice.

The property/room was very cute - anachronistic? but in a good way.
The room was spacious and well equipped - there was a cast iron radiator in the room and a mini fridge with drinks that you could purchase.
They have an entire "backyard" that contained a water stream, water mill, garden with a herb house, some cherry blossom trees, and a little bronze bell that you can ring (I didn't read what it was for, but I think it was love related)
They provide assorted color umbrellas with the hotel name on it.
We were able to connect to Netflix.
There wasn't really space in the fridge for you to use since it was full of things to purchase, but we were only there for one night so it was fine.

Wonderful
Beautiful historic hotel, very nice indoor public both with nice views of mountains. The hotel grounds / garden are beautiful. We stayed in the Forest wing and the room was nice and spacious.
As others have mentioned, the staff are all very kind and friendly, but the service can be a little disjointed. We only found out on checkout that there would be a 2 hour wait to get a taxi or uber so we had to walk downhill with our luggage and wait for a very crowded bus to get to Odawara. Management could have alerted about the issue earlier, maybe even when we checked in to the hotel.

A beautiful, clean and comfortable hotel, this felt like such a treat after some of the tiny rooms I'd had in the cities. Peaceful and relaxing, i hope to come back one day.
It was a 10 until breakfast. For some reason there is only a 2-hour window. I arrived within 5 minutes of breakfast starting to find a long queue as the dining room was already full. I ended up waiting about 40 mins to be seated, which was a nuisance and felt like a waste of time as I had to wait in reception with a number rather than being able to go for a walk or something. The hotel should really review this and perhaps they need to expand the breakfast hours to help. The breakfast was brought out in small parts and slowly so it would be stressful if you need to catch a train or something. Breakfast was the only let down of my stay.

History of the building, gardens.
It was difficult to make dinner reservations at the hotel restaurants. I was told to use room service. It was impossible to get a taxi or Uber.Info you could get from the staff was limited. Service at breakfast was very slow.

The restaurant for Japanese food is beautiful, serves very good sake, but the food is not as interesting or tasty as so much we ate in Japan. And it is expensive. Not recommended.
