My partner’s travel bag was stolen in the hotel lobby during checking. Surveillance video later showed two men following us inside - one distracted my partner while the other walked off with the bag, all in a matter of seconds.
A few concerns: The lobby, which opens directly onto Florence’s largest piazza, is expansive and highly permeable, but seems to be often staffed by a single receptionist. When we realized what had happened, another staff member came out from the office but seemed unsure how to proceed, explaining that only the general manager could review the security footage, and that he was not immediately available.
The following morning, having lost our sense of security there, we decided to end our stay early. To his credit, the GM apologized in person, assuring us that an insurance claim would be filed, and didn’t charge us for the night. Since then, however, we’ve received no meaningful updates regarding the claim.
For what it’s worth, the room itself at Grand Hotel Minerva was spacious and adequately appointed, if somewhat dated. Breakfast staff were warm and attentive.
Unfortunately, without a basic sense of security - and lack of thorough follow-up - those positives ultimately mean very little.

Friendly professional staff, clean comfortable rooms, excellent breakfast, great location to all the major sights and more.
One room was very hot despite turning temperature down but, easily remedying with a fan sent up from the front desk.

The hotel dates back to the 1800s, but has been recently renovated. As soon as we set foot into it, we felt immersed in luxury and drawn by art installations everywhere we looked. The hotel lobby is just stunning. Our suite was absolutely beautiful and featured a ceiling that was part of the Santa Maria Novella monastery. It was a special room that made us feel special. It took us on a trip to the past, but kept us grounded in the present. The hotel is centrally located next to the Santa Maria Novella train station and is a walking distance to anywhere in Firenze.
We were suffocating because of the heat in the room. The hotel turns off the cooling system in winter (even though we are basically still in the fall season); but the heating system was on. Our baby and we were overheating and weren't able to sleep all night, especially that overheating puts the baby at risk. We complained about it, and the hotel provided us with a fan and turned off the heating in the room. This didn't fix the problem, but it was better than the sauna we had experienced. To make matters worse, they joined 2 twin beds together to provide us with the "king bed" that we requested. We were feeling the gap between the beds all the time, which also didn't make the bed comfortable.
Another issue was the Wi-Fi connection. It disconnects very often and is really slow. We didn't expect this to happen at such a luxurious hotel.
Lastly, the breakfast buffet was very limited in terms of food offering. We were not able to feed our infant every day due to the limited options we had (which aren't safe for an infant in terms of texture and/or consumption). The buffet offered the same foods every day. The tables were kept dirty even when we finished our plates. The waiters didn't ask if they could offer the baby any specific food and didn't seem to care. We were cleaning up after our baby, and no one bothered to help. The service isn't really welcoming to be honest, but whatever options they had were tasty. We skipped breakfast twice as we didn't think it was worth it. This definitely didn't make our stay memorable, but rather more frustrating with the heating and Wi-Fi problems.
As we were checking out, no one even bothered to ask us how our stay was, even though we stayed for 5 nights.
