This was my 11th stay at the Reykjavik/Dalur hostel, and I have been pleased with the staff, breakfasts and utilities each and every time. The beds in the large, mixed room were comfortable and clean. I particularly enjoyed meeting my roommate from Victoria Island, BC, Canada. She was very kind, clean and responsible. I look forward to my 12th stay for the Summer, of which I`ve never experienced in Iceland yet. Luisa, who was in staff from time to time is a good asset to Dalur. I`ve been a guest of the hostel since the 1990s and find this to be my favourite hostel in the world! Kudos!!!!
I missed the Northern Lights due to a misguided viewing site. I`ve seen them before. No problem... I wish the shower rooms might have a shelving unit for storage of soap and shampoos. Otherwise, all was fine during my stay...

Very Chill and comfortable hostel and everything runs perfectly.
I saw the Northern Lights at the hostel yard, it’s so amazing.
Only one thing to be considered is the distance from the city. It takes about 30-40 minutes’ walk to downtown if you like walk it would be nice(along the seashore is nice to walk). Bus14 is also available but the bus fee is a little bit high(credit card can be used directly on the bus one trip is 690 isk).

Very Good
This visit, I used the kitchen, which was nice to have after 3 weeks of camping.
Some people did not clean up after themselves in the kitchen so it was not clean.

Wonderful
The self check in was amazing especially since we landed at 2am and didn’t arrive to the property until 3am. Liked that in the four person bedroom there was a table and lots of hooks to hang things, the space was great. Also appreciated the shower and toilet being separate from the sink so multiple people could be getting ready at once.
Beds weren’t made when we arrived which was only a little frustrating since we arrived so early but not the biggest deal. Also not sure how frequently the duvets are washed since I never saw them in a linen cart and they weren’t dropped off with other laundry.

Dalur – HI Eco Hostel has many good qualities, especially if you're looking for a clean, eco-friendly, and calm place to stay in Reykjavík. The rooms are comfortable, well-heated, and clean, with good beds and a quiet atmosphere perfect for resting after a long day of exploring. The location is also very good: the area feels completely safe, even at night, and it’s easy to walk to parks, a public thermal pool (Laugardalslaug), the botanical garden, grocery stores, and cafés. The city center is about 25–30 minutes on foot or a quick bus ride, so you don’t really need a car. Walkability and public transport make it convenient for both solo travelers and groups.
There’s also a cozy café/bar area with snacks, drinks, and breakfast. The breakfast was simple but decent enough to start the day.
However, we had an uncomfortable moment: even though we paid for the breakfast, a staff member came to our table and told us we were not allowed to take our sandwich an apple and a banana with us. She wasn’t rude, but the situation felt unnecessary and left us feeling embarrassed, as if we were doing something wrong. This small interaction left a stronger negative impression than expected, which is the main reason for the 3/5 rating.

This was my first ever hostel, and as a solo female traveler I felt safe. I booked the 6 bed female room and met a lot of nice people. It located in a great area close to a lot of restaurants and sites.
Everything was reasonable

The facilities are great, a nice natural light, it's a plus having a well ventilated place. Comfy bed with clean sheets and linen.
The shower kinda splashed the whole bathroom and it let a mess.

Needed a night stay before a VERY early departure to the airport. Great location, good price, quiet and having a private bathroom for a room of 4 beds was great.
Everything was great.

Very Poor
They had bed bugs, tried to contact hostel after visit so
They would be made aware. Never received any communication back. Both my daughter and I had bites. My husband and son were sleeping on different bunks, they were fine. We stayed in a private family room.

Great location as it is right next to a Hop On/Off location. You can bring your luggage for storage prior to check-in for earlier arrivals. The bar was great as well as the common area. The rooms were very nice and comfortable.
I would have liked body wash for showers and towels included.

Very Poor
Not much.
Place was a dump. Shower controls were over tightened and could NOT be used. Later, we were told by another guest that working showers were in the basement, BUT the rooms were advertised with private in-room showers. Wi-Fi would NOT connect. Beds were flop house quality. Linens from the Civil War. Unhelpful staff. I know it’s a hostel, but geez….
