Everyone appreciates a friendly and competent staff. The Esplanade's physical old world charm was matched by the staff's old world courtesy and care.
Tying the temperature controls to the quality of the seal on century old windows may save a few Euros, but it was a source of frustration trying to get the AC to perform properly.

Heritage decor spacious room and bathroom very clean. Responsive staff.
Strange rules about only being served drinks outside no food in the Bistro. Didn’t make sense. Didn’t like having to ask to have preauthorised money back on my credit card when I was told it would be done the day we left.

- Overall hotel, rooms and experience feels very luxurious.
- The location is immediately adjacent to the main train station and lots of attractions/activities
- Excellent room service with easy ordering on the TV
- Front staff and concierge staff are very courteous and helpful
- The restaurant at the hotel has excellent food
- The toiletries provided are high quality
- Very comfortable bed and bedding
- Parking is a nightmare. There is a nearby parking garage, but it is currently 2 Euro per hour (48 Euro per day), and there is a bit of a walk from the garage to the hotel through the underground mall. There is valet parking, which is excellent, but costs ~30 Euro per day. There is essentially no street parking close by.
- The front entrance outside the hotel feels cramped, the driveway is very short (for taxis, valet, people checking in) so it can be hard to maneuver
- The rooms are a little outdated, with some visible wear and tear (bathrooms, carpets, walls/windows, etc)
- With the luxury comes a higher price as well

As good as hotels get. Everything was top-notch, from wonderful staff at check-in to our clean and luxurious room and bathroom. If you appreciate history, elegance, and want to treat yourself to a stay in a 4 star hotel you can't do much better than this.

Disappointing
I liked the location and the historical significance.
You may read this review and think I'm pedantic but I consider this as one of the best hotels in Zagreb and therefore it has high expectations to deliver as such.
This was a work trip but also a reason to celebrate our anniversary with my husband. I made a note of this on the reservation. When we got to the room, there was a bottle of wine, but no note so we were unsure if this was for our anniversary or part of the minibar. There were also flowers but it was clear that they had been left over from previous guests because they were dying & you could tell from the receding. murky water level.
The bath amenities were great, but the hairdryer, which was attached to the top drawer in the bathroom, broke (the hairdryer, not the drawer). I tried to call guest services but the phone didn't work either. Maintenance came to replace it while I was alone in the room.
We went out for dinner in town and when we returned to the room, there was a note from the GM, which was nice, but no mention of the anniversary or the wine so we left everything where it was.
Upon checking out, we went past guest services to drop off the keys. The guest service agent sat, while we stood, and informed me that we owe a few euros for city tax. Not sure why that's not just included in the cost of the room. She remained seated while she ran my credit card. Its an odd thing when the guest stands and the agent sits. She handed me the credit card without asking how the stay was or thanking us for staying.
