It’s location, it’s breakfast and it’s architecture/decoration.
Some of it’s rules about pool, sauna and other amenities usage.
The wellness center usage is limited to guests staying at the 7th floor of the hotel…this is NOT clearly stated when booking is made!!!

The Wellington is truly a luxury experience. We were last here 10 years ago & had always promised ourselves that we’d return. My husband is 70 this year, so that seemed an ideal reason.
The level of service is outstanding - every single member of staff we encountered greeted us. Whether it was someone from Housekeeping, one of the Porters, Front Desk staff or a member of the Restaurant staff every single one was pleasant & attentive.

Breakfast was fine. Cost of drinks in the bar and for items from mini bar in rooms ridiculous. Location was good. Attitude of a staff member on reception was very haughty and not helpful or acceptable. Luckily another staff member stepped in to resolve the issue.

The hotel is located in Retiro and surrounded by wondetful restaurants and shopping areas. The rooms were spacious and offered great amenities.
I did not appreciate the concierge’s behavior when he interrupted the security officer helping me with my suitcase. It was 3pm and I had to pick up my suitcase, which I had asked them store after I had checked out. He asked me if I need to check out, I said no I already had done so in the morning. He then asked me what my room number was. He then proceeded to call someone for reception and ask in Spanish. I understand Spanish well enough to understand he decided to double check. I found this absolutely unacceptable. He told me it is company policy to double check. Double check what? He just decided to assume I am lying?!!! They held a deposit for the entire stay plus 100 euros for each day at check in!! This is not how a 5 star hotel should be behaving. I will not be coming back nor recommending anyone goes there given the judgmental treatment I received. I was not going to let him ruin my day nor mood but I will also make sure to share this.

Location, location, location.
Older facilities, you need to put up with and older infrastructure. Air conditioning is controled by them which i don’t understand in a 5 star hotel.
