Very Poor
The volunteers seemed decent.
Fraud and terrible management.
I had planned to stay 8 nights at this place. When it came time to pay, they told me they use a completely independent exchange rate, different from what banks and Google use. I wanted to pay in the local currency. Before arriving I went to the bank to exchange my money into colones, and when I tried to pay, they wanted to charge me an extra $20 just for having converted the currency.
When I asked why they were charging me more, they said it was because they use a different exchange rate (not even the bank’s rate). I had already exchanged my money, and the staff’s response was that it was my mistake for changing the currency because they wanted dollars. We spoke to the owner and received the same response.
All of this could easily be avoided if they accepted card payments, but they don’t (if they accepted cards, they wouldn’t be able to run this scam).
After this, we were discriminated against for being Mexican. They said Mexicans steal and asked why I was complaining when “in Mexico they steal from you just for thinking” (an awful response from management, especially when trying to justify an illegal act). My wife was ignored and not spoken to at all, as if this were a sexist place where they only communicate with men.
I have already filed a report with Booking, and over the phone they told me that what this place is doing not only goes against Booking’s policies but is also illegal, and that they would file a formal report against the establishment.
If you plan to stay here, be prepared to pay more and receive poor service.

Disappointing
Started off pretty good. Jannis (not sure how it's spelled, but I think he's the owner) was pleasant and made me feel welcome. Other visitors were nice and friendly.
Location was good
While Jannis welcomed me warmly, the experience quickly went downhill with the other staff member on site. He was consistently rude, condescending, and made inappropriate remarks that made me feel extremely uncomfortable. Answering simple questions seemed like a bother to him, and he was just unable to be professional.
One particular incident led me to leave the property a day early, even though I had already paid for two nights. The lock on the room door was broken and wouldn't close properly. When he came to fix it, I was in the middle of changing. Instead of handling the situation with basic respect, he opened the door without knocking and said, "Negrita, I'm gonna fix the door — you can't come out till I'm done." While I understand that the term negrita can be used affectionately in Costa Rican culture, his tone was anything but. It felt patronizing and aggressive.
I politely said I’d step outside to let him fix the lock, and as I passed him, he muttered "qué asco" under his breath — which translates to “how disgusting” or “that’s gross.” That was the final straw for me. I packed up and left that same evening.

Wonderful
There is a big common area with several hammocks. The kitchen is quite well equipped, only the fridge could be a bit cleaner. However, while the dorms are quite small, they were very clean and sheets get changed regularly. Breakfast is very good. Its a short walk to the main streets. Generally, very relaxed atmosphere and easy to socialize. It is very basic, but for the price I can recommend staying here.

Yanis, Carlos and the whole crew are amazing. It’s a lovely place. They prepare delicious breakfast and there is a lot really good coffee for free. The rooms are small but everything is clean and well organized

Fair
the location is not central, but it's still quite close to everything. breakfast was lovely. there are lockers which you can use for free if you have your own lock. the room was super quiet and i got really good sleep. the area is super clean.
the guy on the reception was incredibly arrogant, either trying to be funny or feeling really dominant. one moment he was super rude and the next he was asking how you're feeling after shower. he was weird and i preferred not to stay around him. also in the evening he was playing music, singing and banging on the table which i found inconsiderate towards the guests who tried to chill in the common area.

Great lication in a quiet area but only a short distance from the town center.
Huge common area to chill out on chairs or hammocks.
Attentive staff including owner Glanni and staff member Carlos.
Kitchen has everything you need with several fridges and gas stoves.
Overall a hostel with a chill vibe. I stayed 9 days
The only slightly negative thing was infrequently we would loose water for a brief period but was restored very quickly.

Very Good
The hostel has a lot of chill places, multiple hammocks/tables/chairs where you can hang out with others. The kitchen is also really well equipped and spacious, making it very convenient to cook meals for yourself! While the location is slightly further out of town, since Puerto Viejo is not so big anyways, you’re very quickly at the beach or in the ‘town center’ anyways!! They also have two very sweet and cuddly cats!! Overall it is a really relaxed place to be, no need to worry or stress about anything
While we were there, it was rainy-ish season, so our room was very humid. This is of course not the hostels fault at all, since it’s a climate issue, but it is good to keep in mind

The outdoor spaces are very nice! Big tables make it easy to meet to other travelers. The big kitchen is well equipped and it’s very nice to have breakfast included.
The bathroom wasn’t really clean. I know it has a lot to do with the other travelers, but maybe it should be cleaned a bit more often then?

I had a fantastic experience staying at this hostel! The atmosphere is very relaxed and welcoming, making it a great place to meet fellow travelers or simply unwind. The staff is incredibly attentive and always ready to help with anything you need, which made my stay even more enjoyable.
One of the highlights was the breakfast—it was natural, full of good calories, excellent. The entire place is spotless, with great attention to cleanliness. The hostel is quiet, ensuring a good night's sleep.
I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a cozy, clean, and friendly hostel experience!
Laundry was expensive, but everything in Costa Rica costs a kidney at least.
