The hotel was in a great location and the location was wonderful.
Shower was cold, but that's to be expected. Since it was so hot in Cartagena, the cold shower is actually refreshing.

Friendly staff. I accidentally left one of my belongings behind and so I emailed them saying I will be back in the area in a week. It was no problem and I was happy they kept it safe.
The location and the price

Pleasant
The hostal is in a great location and the staff is friendly and always has a smile on their face. The AC works well in the rooms which is SO needed.
I don’t quite understand why this hostal has such great reviews. We have stayed in MUCH better places for the $45/ night than this one. The room is so small and the bathroom is even smaller, to the point where you can’t even sit straight on the toilet because your knees would run until the wall. You also have to use the sink from an awkward side spot because the toilet is touching the sink. The pillows are very flat and the bed it quite hard. There is no tours or information about Cartagena offered. There are also quite a few sketchy looking people loitering around the entrance most times we entered at night (it is locked during the night so still felt safe). I would definitely say save your money and stay anywhere else.

Staff above all else
Thin walls. I could hear everything that was going on in the other rooms, and the lobby downstairs.

Disappointing
+ location & aircon
- second night a HUGE cucaracha (aka coackroach) showed up on the floor and ran away to the bathroom without posing for the photo. The employe killed it and suggested to disinfect that tiny room with anti-coackroach spray. As there is no ventilarion option, 8I didnt feel like sleeping in fumes, we agreed to be able to sleep in another room. Which had very lively ants trail. They werent too proud to pose and picture below. Lets see if any roach babies are flying back with me from the hostal..
Otherwise, tiny rooms. Once they key got stuck in the lock first night, the lady suggested not locking doors at all as "it is very safe"
Not impressed:/

Absolutely loved my stay here - it was perfect for exploring the city, the location was superb, and staff all really friendly and helpful. The plate of fruit given in the morning was brilliant and the free coffee was also much appreciated. If I come back to Cartagena I'll definitely book to stay here again.

Excellent location. You can walk to most of what you want to see in Cartagena.
Tiny accommodation but functional.

Great location and as a single woman I felt safe in the area. The bed was comfy but the shower cold. My room (#5) was on the smaller side and the windows faced onto an internal spiral staircase that was used by staff so I didn't open my blinds. Given this I felt quite claustrophobic. But all in all I was happy with my room for the price. It seemed to be possibly the better and quieter room out of all the rooms. For a full day there was no power (the whole neighbourhood was out) but then the next day there was still no wifi - another client and I let the girl on the front desk know in the morning but it still wasn't working that night. So I then let the lovely young man on the front desk know and he had it up and running in a few minutes. The fruit and coffee in the morning were a great start to the day. I understand this hotel changed administration in March 2025 so I felt it didn't have the sparkle from previous reviews that attracted me to book it..

Everything was perfect. The 2 girls working in the morning are just amazing and so friendly ! The plate of fruit in the morning was fantastic.
Only one point : in my single room the light button was not secured on the wall so it doesn’t work properly, same issue in my bathroom
Otherwise everything was perfect !

Great little hotel, close to the action but far enough away so that it is quiet. Staff were so friendly and supportive.

Great location on the edge of the busy parts of Getsemani, with very little outside noise. Felt like a safe area of the city. The front desk staff were helpful, and the air conditioning was amazing to have.
I'm a bit surprised by the current 9.4 rating, but everything is relative. I wouldn't stay in Cartagena for more than 1 night, so this hostel is a good option.
Extremely small bathroom; a tall person would struggle to sit on the toilet. The building is very old and has some interesting character, but as a result the small rooms feel a bit dungeon-like, with old worn tile/paint and a tiny window. It's super humid in Cartagena, so the building is dank and the reception room smells awful.
Do NOT let them put you in the 1st floor room closest to the reception desk. It's very loud and doesn't smell good.

Hostal Casa de las Américas is a cosy guesthouse nestled in a quiet street, just a short walk from the main attractions of Getsemaní. The location is ideal for exploring the vibrant neighbourhood while enjoying a peaceful retreat at the end of the day. The room was spacious and very clean, offering a comfortable space to relax. The atmosphere of the guesthouse was calm and respectful. The hosts were exceptionally friendly and always willing to offer helpful recommendations, making us feel truly welcome. A wonderful choice for anyone looking for a quiet yet well-situated stay in Cartagena!
All good.

David was so nice and helpful during my stay! He was always there to help you with anything or just to have a little chat. The room was small but still had everything I needed so it was great. Also loved the fact that the hotel was on a quiet street but everything was within walking distance.

Can not call the fruit and marginal coffee a breakfast. No top sheet and miniscule rooms.
