We booked a room in the hotel with a view, but unfortunately, our balcony faced the foot of the mountain. They served a very good breakfast. If, like us, you plan to spend only a few days in Rio, this hotel will suit you. The area is very safe. There is a grocery, a pharmacy, and a bar nearby. However, if you are planning a romantic trip or a beach vacation, this hotel may not be suitable. The view from the terrace where breakfast is served is incredible, overlooking the Christ statue, the harbor, and other parts of the city. The reception staff speaks English, but other staff members do not.
The soundproofing is poor, and the furniture is not new.

As much as I enjoyed staying here 10 years ago, I regret my recent stay. Although the owner is very helpful and a lovely person, being in the hotel business brings challenges that he was not able to handle.
The large rooms face a main street with unbearable noise. I didn't sleep 3.5 of the 5 nights I booked. They worked on the street until morning and you felt like the machines were right next to you - and they were. Although the houses on the street were notified of the planned work, the hotel staff claimed it to be unexpected and denied responsibility. No cancellation was offered, only a downgrade to a room facing back or a 2 (two) percent discount.

I have a fondness towards this place. I started my trip to Brazil there and returned two weeks later towards the end of the trip. It's not fancy but it has character and feels safe. It's pretty small. The host has a nice demeanor. I arrived early at 7am and he managed to get me a room to sleep in. Great location. Urca is a charming and relaxing pocket in Rio. There's a great spot downstairs for po de queijo, caf, aa, drinks, snacks. A Brazilian deli as it were. Praia Vermelha is a pleasant walk away. You can run from the hotel to the trail that takes you up Morro De Urca. I stayed in two different rooms. The second had a tremendous view of the Botafogo Bay, and O Cristo in the distance. A nice little writing desk. Tremendous stuff. The hospitality is also great. It's laidback yet attentive. They care.
I stayed in two different rooms. One lacked a view. It was comfortable but the small outside area with the hammock had an unpleasant smell. The AC worked well and the room was restful. The beds are stiff. I sort of like a stiff mattress. The place has character. I prefer this to the sterile dullness. I strongly encourage the hotel to switch to warm interior lighting away from the abrasive hot white light.

Fantastic localisation. Great personel. View on the bay and Cristo Redentor - unforgettable. The bar and shop below and a lot of young people in the area- but calm at the same time - what more could you want?

Great hostel in a a great spot, in Urca a very quiet and safe neighborhood. Andreas was a very welcoming and helpful host. The place itself has a pretty terrace and the breakfast was extraordinary, a vast choice of homemade products and individually prepared eggs. I would totally recommend it and I will come back when I am in Rio again.

A pleasant little hotel in one of the best locations. Iconic view, safe neighborhood, super helpful owner, good breakfast. The location is full of positive energy, there are many pleasant bars and restaurants nearby. The waterfront is always full of young people having fun. Botafogo bay with sailboats, Sugarloaf literally within reach, Corcovado with Christ in every shot.
The mattress was comfortable but the bed frame groaned with every turn and looked like it was about to fall apart. Wifi very strong and fast in the stairwell but crappy and lost in the room. It would require repeaters.

Breakfast was very good! Also the kindness of the staff, which are very genuine. Comfy bed and pillow.
Good A/C system.
Good location, in front of the police station, with bakeries around and aa!
The noise during the night and Friday evening, but this is not the hotel's fault.
Water pressure was not so strong in the bathroom.

It was just what I needed arriving in Rio. Fantastic area, staff, breakfast, and room. I arrived early but Andreas was still able to accommodate me. I liked that I had privacy in my room, but could talk to other travellers on the balcony when I was feeling sociable. Urca's a great area too, the safest in Rio apparently
I missed out on breakfast the first morning, but there was a miscommunication and it was my mistake

The view from the breakfast\pool deck area is stunning. The owner is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very nice with fresh juice and delicious homemade cakes as well. a Lot of beautiful antique furniture in the house.
There was a terrible garlic smell coming from the restaurant below. We could not open our room window at all. The owner said that it is a very big problem for them, but nothing is being done about it. There is no place to hang your towels on in the bathroom.

I loved everything about this place: my apartment on the terrace, the view from the terrace, the amazing home made breakfast, the minipool, the location and most of all the super friendly, kind and helpful staff. I would love to stay here again.

We stayed 3 nights in September 2023 at Urca Guest House. Central location in Urca (we used Uber and 99 to get around to other places), near the Sugarloaf hill and Praia Vermelha (nice for a nightly swim). The neighbourhood is quite ok; we walked around after sunset without issues. Very pleasant and helpful staff (checked up with before arrival, allowed us to shower after our return from the beach on our last day). Comfy bed, hot shower, extensive breakfast, big room (with terrace), small swimming pool. Cool spot to discover Rio.
Small cobwebs in corners (maybe do a deep cleaning) and we got bitten a lot by mosquitos (not really the hotel's responsibility, but maybe they could install anti-mosquito screens?). No elevator (because it's an old mansion), but staff helps with suitcase. Arrival must be before 21h!

Pleasant
The view from the communal balcony where breakfast is served is excellent with water and boats in the foreground and Christ Redeemer statue in the distance. The area around the bay and to a local beach provided a pleasant walk if you watch the broken footpaths. The breakfasts were good and the owner and staff were friendly.
50 narrow steps to reach the room we were given. This is also the floor where breakfast is served. The bed mattress seemed old and too soft with flat pillows that required replacing. The room became exceptionally hot with the bare rock of part of Sugarloaf directly behind it and the air-conditioner needed to be very cold but because of its positioning was too cold as it was directed straight onto the bed. There was a nail protruding 5mm out of the bedroom floor that we had to cover so as not to step on it. The bathroom was miniscule and one has to squeeze between the toilet and old wasbasin to see in a mirror. The shower was pitiful with exposed wiring. The kitchen of our suite was very basic, and did not inspire us to prepare any food in it
The big old refrigerator began to fall off its stand every time the door was pulled open.
