This was my first hostel experience and first time in Rio! I was traveling alone and stayed for 6 nights. I’m really happy I chose El Misti. The location is very close to the beach, and I felt safe during my entire stay. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Also, guests often go to the beach together and plan activities for each day of the week! I hope to visit again one day.

This review is coming from a true Carioca traveler — so if you're thinking about where to stay in Rio, you might want to read this first.
Some places are just unique… because of the location, the people, the vibe, the memories. El Misti is all of that combined.
Everyone’s talking about the boom in tourism in Brazil, with more and more gringos coming to explore our cities. As a Carioca myself, I got curious — what is the experience actually like for someone visiting Rio? So I decided to check it out firsthand.
The moment I arrived at El Misti, I met Rodrigo (saudações vascainas). Within 20 seconds we were already joking, laughing, and planning the boat party. That energy didn’t stop there — Jordana, Ana, Effy and Eduardo made everything feel natural and welcoming in a way that’s very Rio. Not forced, just real.
Moving from reception to the bar, the vibe only got better. Lucas, Thiago, Jaque, Tay, and Gabi really bring that classic hostel energy — social, fun, and easy to connect. The space is perfect: big enough for group activities and pre-drinks, but still intimate enough to feel like a community. Outside, there’s plenty of space to hang without losing that cozy feeling. Not to mention the great rooftop lounge!!
And of course — location matters. You’re literally one minute from the beach, near so many great food spots and another minute from the metro station. The volunteers (Maude, Youssra, and Mr. Canadian) took things to another level at the beach by: bringing a speaker, organizing barbecues, playing altinha, and just enjoying the sun together. Chairs and umbrellas included, by the way. All this just as warm up time for our pre drinks, games and night out guided by Landim and Thais together with some Bem Brasil crew (Fabiana, Luiza & Serena) extending this awesome vibe from El Misti family till sunrise!

Amazing location, a block away from the beach and the metro. There's also a great bakery next door. As a solo female traveler I always felt safe walking around and the vibe and energy of the hostel was epic. I made some friends for life and it was easy to do so because the hostel has tons of activities every day/night with a great team of volunteers easing things along. The staff was so so friendly and I felt at home as soon as I arrived, they helped me bring my bags up and answered all of my questions with ease and kindness. Just great vibes and banter from all. I even rebooked to stay there again at the end of my trip! They clean very often and I never felt any of the common areas/bathrooms were ever dirty. It was honestly exceptional. Shoutout to Rodrigo, Jojo, Lucas, Luis as well as volunteers Vanessa, Tuva, Tim and Laura for making my trip truly unforgettable.

I wish there were showers separated from the rooms in case the one in the bedroom is busy. If you are in a room with 10 people it can get a bit chaotic.

The staff is super super nice. A special thanks to Luiz, Cristal, Eric, Jordana and Tim that made me feel like home. The activities organized every day by them are very nice and perfect if you’re traveling solo like me! Also special thanks to the cleaning team. They are very professional and kept the room and shared toilet very clean! I love it
Sometimes the room gets very noisy because of this metal drawers. It’s a bit annoying! I would invest in more silent friendly facilities in the future. Despite from that everything was perfect!

If you are a solo traveler looking to meet new people and for a place full of social activities, this is the hostel for you!!!

I really enjoyed my stay at El Misti. It is a fun party hostel with lots of activities. It is in a safe neighborhood and 1 min away from the beach. They offer various tours which I highly recommend to try. The staff are amazing!
My bed sheet had a stain on it. I asked the staff and they quickly replaced my bed sheet, however the new sheet also had a stain.
