Right across from Gent-Sint-Pieters railway station, the family-run Hotel Castel offers a beer house, sauna facilities and good transport connections into the city center. Location very good directly opposite the railway station. Room a good size and very comfortable bed. Nice bathroom with shower and bath. Breakfast was OK, but little choice of hot food. Dinner in the restaurant in the evening was excellent.
The curtains were very flimsy and didn't keep out the light, so the room was quite bright by 6am. The landing outside the room was very echoing, so when neighbouring guests came in at 2am and 4am (!!!) their doors banged loudly. Carpet on the landing would cure this problem.

The location was very good and handy; especially exceptional when we travelled by train.
The proprietor has a duty of care to their guests of any potential hazards to health. In this case, there was micro dust particles embedded in the heavy window curtains and window-sills from building works, all within 100meters from the front facade of the hotel. As a result, I became very ill from this, due to my allergy to dust! As a result of this, it spoilt my stay at Ghent and I cannot give it a higher rating.

Arriving and departing Ghent via train, this hotel was ideally located less than 2 minutes' walk from the railway station. Staff were friendly and helpful. I had a nice room overlooking the plaza in front of the railway station. The Nepalese meal in the adjoining restaurant was very good indeed.
The only issue - and it's a VERY small one - is that the elevator does not open directly on to the first floor, so after exiting the elevator, I had to carry my luggage up a short flight of stairs to my door level.

Location was good,steps away from the Gent-Sint-Pieters train stations. The staff tried helping me where they could, so there was that.
I ended up getting three different rooms, none of them appropriate. The first room I entered had a malfunctioning door with an alarm that wouldn't stop ringing. The staff kept telling me that I was supposed to just use my card to stop the alarm if the alarm would go off again, which happened every 20 sec. So I was not willing to be standing next to the door for an entire night. Okay, second room, in the private area of the hotel. The bathtub didn't have a stop so after the stress of moving rooms with all my stuff, my hope for taking a relaxing bath was gone. In addition, no internet. I went to get dinner and upon my return, one of the staff members was waiting for me, to send me back to room 1. The alarm was fixed. Not a problem. Back to the third floor. Of course the alarm wasn't fixed, and in addition, the staff told me that there was a third room that would be better, at least there would be the regular hotel internet. Off I went and indeed it looked pretty good, and there was working internet. But the shower wasn't functional (water everywhere except coming from the shower head) and I heard people in the neighboring rooms snore. But by the time I got to room 3 it was close to midnight and my food had gone lukewarm so I decided to stay. But I will not return to this one.
